It's the crossover episode nobody knew they needed but were so glad to have: Supernatural, Season 13, Episode 16, Scoobynatural. We break down the episode, including hidden Easter eggs. Diana and Liz also compare the episode to the original 1970 Scooby-Doo story it riffs on, unpacking what changed, what got darker, and why the crossover makes so much sense for Supernatural. They dig into the guest voice cast too, including returning Scooby legends.

Transcript
Speaker A:

On this week's episode of Devil Strap podcast, Supernatural gets used to creepy ghost kids.

Speaker B:

And the Scooby gang gets you used to shady real estate developers.

Speaker B:

Let's do this.

Speaker B:

Welcome to this week's episode of Devil's Trap podcast.

Speaker B:

I'm Diana.

Speaker A:

And I'm Liz.

Speaker B:

And we're going to talk about season 13, episode 16, Scooby Natural.

Speaker A:

Scooby Dooby Doo, almost.

Speaker A:

So that's called Scooby Natural because Scooby and Supernatural mixed together makes Scooby natural.

Speaker A:

They had a baby.

Speaker A:

That's what it would be.

Speaker B:

They had a baby and it's this episode.

Speaker B:

What have you been up to, Liz?

Speaker A:

Really?

Speaker A:

Nothing.

Speaker A:

I have been sitting in empty houses waiting on people to do things, which is the adult life.

Speaker A:

And so, you know, just one of the.

Speaker A:

Those messages for all you boomers out there, maybe get rid of your stuff before you die so your kids don't have to sit in empty houses dealing with all your crap.

Speaker A:

We love you, though.

Speaker A:

Love you so much.

Speaker A:

So much.

Speaker A:

Just saying.

Speaker A:

And that's just a kind of a thing for anybody, you know, just like whatever you hoard is going to be.

Speaker A:

If you die, that's somebody else's problem.

Speaker A:

So think about that as you're collecting all your junk.

Speaker B:

It's a good thing to remember.

Speaker A:

It's a good thing to remember everyone.

Speaker B:

I like to do a good purge.

Speaker A:

I like to do a good purge.

Speaker A:

But, you know, having to get a house down to nothing, and especially, you know, it's not like I've never moved before, but a house that people have lived in for 40 years has just so much stuff in it.

Speaker A:

Just so much stuff.

Speaker A:

Literally truckloads of stuff of trash that just things that are just going away and going to the dump and things that went to good homes, too.

Speaker A:

But it's, you know, just.

Speaker A:

It's just obscene the amount of things that we collect and it's, you know, things that we.

Speaker A:

I mean, I'm not saying they're not necessary to live our life, but good God, it's just a lot of stuff.

Speaker A:

Feel very George Carlin right now.

Speaker A:

Like, you get a house, put the stuff in, then you need to get a bigger house.

Speaker A:

But yeah, kind of done with stuff for the moment and sitting around waiting for people in a house without Internet.

Speaker A:

So,.

Speaker B:

Man, good times.

Speaker A:

Good times.

Speaker A:

What have you been up to?

Speaker A:

You've been up to some more fun things?

Speaker A:

Yeah, we.

Speaker B:

I went and saw the Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter and it was fun.

Speaker B:

And I got a cool photo and yeah, that was my A show I worked really hard on for the last two years.

Speaker B:

So it was a big deal.

Speaker B:

Ballroom where they played in:

Speaker B:

It was fun.

Speaker B:

And then, then I had another show with I got to see Ben Haggard sing Mama, tried kind of cool with with his brother and mom, so even better.

Speaker B:

And saw some cool country music and then including my friend Summer Dean.

Speaker B:

And then, yeah, getting ready to travel a little bit.

Speaker B:

So it's been busy, busy, busy over here.

Speaker B:

Cool.

Speaker B:

But yeah, yeah, I don't know.

Speaker B:

That's what I got.

Speaker B:

That's what I got.

Speaker B:

So, yeah, let's talk about this episode.

Speaker A:

Well, first, this week would have been the 21st was the 21st anniversary of the first episode of Supernatural.

Speaker A:

So just want to acknowledge that happened in real time this week.

Speaker A:

So that was cool.

Speaker A:

Nothing else is going on really in the world, but there's lots of celebrations over that and lots of pictures and things.

Speaker A:

And so yeah, this was Scooby Natural.

Speaker A:

,:

Speaker A:

And it was written by James Krieg and Jeremy Adams.

Speaker A:

And having an animated show has something that had been discussed before in the writer's room.

Speaker A:

Eric Kripke and Ben Edmond would always be like, can we have an animated character?

Speaker A:

But doing that from scratch is a lot of work, andrew Dabb said to Variety magazine.

Speaker A:

But In November of:

Speaker A:

And the idea made sense, not only because of all the times that Supernatural has referenced it, but also because both shows were Warner Brothers properties, which helped remove any of the rights issues of the crossover.

Speaker A:

And Dab said again, what we wanted to make clear was our guys are in an episode of Supernatural and those guys are in an episode of Scooby Doo.

Speaker A:

That doesn't mean there aren't crossovers and revelations relations and things like that, but there are certain things that Warner Brothers doesn't want, like Velma beheading a vampire.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker A:

idea was pitched in November:

Speaker A:

So that's why you'll notice in this just like a Cass's outfit is the one from last season because I didn't know he was going to change it this season, which is why Cass has this strike tie when we get to him.

Speaker A:

So fun.

Speaker B:

Manusha yeah.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And so our episode opens with no recap.

Speaker B:

And Dean is fighting a giant dinosaur plushie.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

And it's very cute and we don't understand what is going on, but Sam busts in and he tackles it and Dean puts holy oil on it.

Speaker A:

And then it burns and it explodes.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

And a man pops up from behind the pawn shop counter that they are in.

Speaker B:

And he.

Speaker B:

And Sam's like, I'm sorry for the mess.

Speaker B:

He's like, you saved me from a giant plushie trying to kill me.

Speaker B:

We are all good.

Speaker B:

And then this other dude walks in, Jay.

Speaker B:

And he's like, oh.

Speaker B:

Apparently he heard the ruckus and he's concerned about this big mess.

Speaker B:

And they're like, oh, it exploded.

Speaker B:

Bad batteries.

Speaker B:

And while they.

Speaker B:

And our guy that works at the pawn shops, like, oh yeah, they basically.

Speaker B:

This guy Jay, like owns the whole neighborhood basically at this point.

Speaker B:

And so Sam Andina sidebarring about how, you know, hey, this is.

Speaker B:

They came.

Speaker B:

They came here to address some giant lizard sightings.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker B:

And they ended up killing Barney.

Speaker B:

And it was kind of satisfying.

Speaker B:

So I can see.

Speaker B:

But yeah, but is this a cursed object?

Speaker B:

I don't know.

Speaker B:

They are not sure because it does not exhibit other signs of a cursed object.

Speaker B:

And our gentleman that runs this pawn shop offers them anything in the store as thanks and Dean.

Speaker B:

Quickly.

Speaker B:

While Sam tries to decline, Dean quickly decides on the flat screen TV that needs to come with them.

Speaker A:

Of course he does.

Speaker A:

So back in the bunker, Sam is trying to do research because he can't figure out how a curse object was moving around like that.

Speaker A:

And Dean comes in and wants him to be just like Elsa.

Speaker A:

Just let it go, Sam.

Speaker A:

Let it go.

Speaker A:

And besides that, he's got something important to show Sam.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And it's Dean's cave.

Speaker B:

Or.

Speaker B:

Or the Fortress of Denitude.

Speaker B:

But he's got foosball, he's got an all vinyl jukebox, double Lazy Boys and a bar.

Speaker B:

He just needs his kegerator setup still.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And there's a framed vinyl record of Kansas's Point of no Return hanging on the wall.

Speaker A:

And it's the same album that Dean looked at a record store in season one, episode 17, Hell House.

Speaker A:

Nice.

Speaker B:

Nice.

Speaker B:

I appreciate that.

Speaker B:

So Dean's going to turn on the TV and he does, ignoring Sam's questions about when he had time to make this room.

Speaker B:

And he turns it on and the TVs got some crazy pinkish purpl purple static going on.

Speaker B:

And a pink laser thing shoots out of it and sucks them into the television.

Speaker B:

And they're cartoons now.

Speaker B:

And I really appreciate when Sam suggests that this could be a dream.

Speaker B:

And Dean slaps him and does the cartoony giant handprint on Sam's face.

Speaker A:

That was exciting.

Speaker A:

What else is exciting?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And what else is exciting is that baby is there.

Speaker B:

Yes, baby is there too.

Speaker B:

And they're also.

Speaker B:

They discuss if they were stuck to the tv, if it was an angel thing or the Trickster.

Speaker B:

And they're like, but he's dead.

Speaker B:

Or is he?

Speaker B:

But yeah, baby's there.

Speaker B:

They don't know why.

Speaker B:

Yeah, they don't know why baby's there.

Speaker B:

But they're animated and it's weird.

Speaker B:

And it's beyond weird, which is kind of their thing.

Speaker B:

So now they're going to treat it like a case and work it.

Speaker B:

So they're going to get in baby and drive to the malt shop.

Speaker B:

And what's at the malt shop?

Speaker B:

The Mystery Machine is parked outside.

Speaker B:

Yes, that Mystery Machine.

Speaker B:

We've got a Scooby Doo crossover with a Scooby.

Speaker B:

Natural intro.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker A:

And inside, the Scooby gang is dancing and Scooby is drinking a milkshake because that is what dogs do.

Speaker A:

And Dean thinks that Scooby is the greatest talking dog ever.

Speaker A:

And he has dibs on Daphne.

Speaker A:

And this is where this starts.

Speaker A:

And this is.

Speaker A:

I don't know.

Speaker A:

I don't.

Speaker A:

I just know I'm gonna about it for most of the episode because it just annoys me.

Speaker A:

I feel like it's a regressive Dean.

Speaker A:

I don't feel that.

Speaker A:

I know that Dean would hit on Daphne, but I don't know that Dean would be a pervert.

Speaker A:

This Dean is a pervert.

Speaker A:

I, I don't like it.

Speaker B:

It's creepy.

Speaker A:

It's too much.

Speaker A:

It's, it's, it's, it's, it's gross.

Speaker A:

And so anyways, I, I, that's.

Speaker A:

I will try not to say it too much.

Speaker A:

It's just, it's just gross.

Speaker B:

I think I oohed a lot at it.

Speaker B:

But yeah.

Speaker B:

And so this is Dean's dream come true because he grew up watching Scooby Doo.

Speaker B:

And he says, why?

Speaker B:

It's because whenever dad would, you know, when they'd be on the road all the time and they'd stop somewhere and they'd have the TV on Scooby Doo.

Speaker B:

Scooby and the gang would always be on the TV doing their thing.

Speaker B:

So that's why he has a, an affinity and attachment towards this cartoon and these characters specifically.

Speaker B:

And except Fred.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Who is a walk.

Speaker B:

He does not like Fred.

Speaker A:

I had to.

Speaker A:

I had to double check what he called him.

Speaker A:

I was like.

Speaker A:

I had to look at the transcript to be like, what did he say?

Speaker A:

And he said, a wad.

Speaker A:

And I don't think I've heard that insult in a very long time.

Speaker A:

And I guess maybe short for, like, Dick Wade.

Speaker A:

Is that where it comes from?

Speaker A:

Like, what is the etymology of the insult wad?

Speaker A:

And so.

Speaker A:

Okay, I'm going with dick wad.

Speaker B:

We'll go with that.

Speaker B:

So Sam's like, yeah, we're not like them.

Speaker B:

They.

Speaker B:

We, you know, our ghosts don't wear masks and we don't have a talking dog.

Speaker B:

And Dean's like, cass is kind of like a talking dog, which I thought was funny.

Speaker B:

But they're gonna go meet the Scooby gang.

Speaker B:

And Dean, once again, immediately is hitting on Daphne.

Speaker B:

And yeah, so they're talking about, you know how scoop.

Speaker B:

They are celebrating because Scooby has inherited a fortune left by a Southern colonel that he saved from drowning in a fish pond.

Speaker B:

Sam's like, okay, but he's dead now.

Speaker B:

He saved him.

Speaker B:

He's like, yeah, he died.

Speaker B:

Red Busto.

Speaker B:

It's like, yes, he died from cancer.

Speaker B:

So they are looking at the newspaper article about this, which Sam quickly points out there's no words in the newspaper because it's a cartoon.

Speaker B:

It's gray blocks with squiggle squiggles in it.

Speaker B:

But either way, then Sam wants to just like, we just need to get out of here.

Speaker B:

And Dean's like, no, I'm gonna hang out with Marmaduke and hit on Daphne.

Speaker B:

That's probably.

Speaker A:

And she's clearly with Fred.

Speaker A:

And that's really annoying.

Speaker A:

And the gang thinks that they have a mystery starting.

Speaker A:

And Dean volunteers.

Speaker A:

They are mystery solving.

Speaker A:

So skill.

Speaker A:

Skills.

Speaker A:

And so Shaggy and Scooby are gonna make road sandwiches and Dean's gonna make a giant one.

Speaker A:

And he puts it in his giant mouth and he's very excited.

Speaker A:

We are all very excited to see his mouth go that wide.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

And then they decide they are going to race.

Speaker B:

So baby.

Speaker B:

Dean and Sam pull up in baby next to the Mystery Machine.

Speaker B:

And they on the way to the.

Speaker B:

The.

Speaker B:

The.

Speaker B:

The Colonel's mansion.

Speaker B:

But the Mystery Machine leaves baby in the dust.

Speaker B:

And Sam points out that Dean just got beat by a micro van, because he did.

Speaker B:

And as they peel out, we see in the background, someone in a trench coat is there.

Speaker B:

Who could this be?

Speaker B:

Who.

Speaker A:

Who is this mysterious figure?

Speaker B:

So they get to the mansion and Dean's still mad, thinks that Fred cheated.

Speaker B:

But either way, Dean knows what episode from the mansion.

Speaker B:

And it's a night of fright is no delight, which I do appreciate that.

Speaker A:

this episode is Based on the:

Speaker A:

Where are you?

Speaker A:

And so this was the 16th episode of Scooby Doo that was ever made.

Speaker A:

,:

Speaker A:

The actual Hannah and Barbera, which I just think is.

Speaker A:

That's insane.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I like that.

Speaker B:

So they go inside and we've got Colonel Sanders attorney has gathered everybody to play a record for them where the Colonel will outline his will like they do in movies and cartoons.

Speaker B:

And he's got.

Speaker B:

He's talking to all the family.

Speaker B:

And basically everybody's going to get one equal part of $1 million if they spend the night in the family mansion.

Speaker B:

But it's haunted, so.

Speaker B:

So Scooby Doo is of course scared.

Speaker B:

And Sam is talking shit about the whole premise and legality of this entire system.

Speaker B:

And Velma is just like, no, there's no such thing as haunted.

Speaker B:

And by the way, things like this just happen all the time.

Speaker B:

Because to Velma, they do so.

Speaker B:

But Dean has decided that Sam should not inform.

Speaker B:

They've decided that he has decided that they should not inform the Scooby gang that they are in cartoon.

Speaker B:

He does not want them to realize this.

Speaker B:

And because they are pure and innocent and good.

Speaker B:

And so anyway, Sam's like, well, why don't we just skip to the end of the episode if you know what's happening is it.

Speaker B:

But really the theory is that Dean just wants more time with Daphne.

Speaker B:

But either way.

Speaker B:

So the attorney's leaving, he's going to return in the morning.

Speaker B:

And he laughs maniacally.

Speaker B:

And Dean's like, turns out he's the bad guy.

Speaker B:

Which is shocking to no one.

Speaker B:

But they're all gonna go to bed.

Speaker B:

And Dean hits on Daphne again.

Speaker B:

The theme has begun.

Speaker B:

And she tells him that boys and girls don't sleep in the same room.

Speaker B:

Silly.

Speaker B:

And goes off with Velma because they're pure and innocent.

Speaker B:

Good.

Speaker B:

So Fred, Shaggy, Scooby and Sam and Dean are all in a room together in their PJs.

Speaker B:

And Dean and is calling his.

Speaker B:

His sleeping gown a sleeping robe.

Speaker B:

And he really is comfortable in it.

Speaker B:

He's very happy about it and says.

Speaker A:

Is like being wrapped in hugs.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And so they see that we cut over to Daphne and Velma discussing Sam and Dean and Velma is talking bad about or talking about Sam and his giant shoulders, but also him believing in things being haunted and apparent.

Speaker B:

And Daphne points out that being a big lug is kind of her thing, so.

Speaker A:

And she blushes.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I'm sorry.

Speaker A:

I'm in camp.

Speaker A:

Velma's a lesbian.

Speaker A:

I don't think.

Speaker A:

I don't believe this trope at all.

Speaker A:

So anyways, Cousin simple is brushing his teeth, and it gets cold in there.

Speaker A:

And then we see a ghost in the mirror who has a knife.

Speaker A:

Oh, no.

Speaker A:

But then we switch scenes, and Dean is eating another sandwich.

Speaker A:

And Sam is telling Sam what's going to happen based on the old episode.

Speaker A:

And he says, in a few minutes, we're gonna find out that Cousin Simple's missing.

Speaker A:

The Scoobies are gonna think that it's a ghost, but it's really just the lawyer.

Speaker A:

Cause good creeps in disguise.

Speaker A:

And then there's a timely scream.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And so they find.

Speaker B:

They run down to their rooms, and they go to the cousin's room, and he is dead.

Speaker B:

But in this cartoon, he is now covered in blood.

Speaker B:

And Scooby Doo is not known for puddles of blood.

Speaker B:

So this is shocking to everybody involved.

Speaker B:

And Dean's like, this is not.

Speaker B:

This is not how this is supposed to go.

Speaker B:

He's supposed to be missing, and there should be a dummy body later.

Speaker B:

And I do.

Speaker B:

Like, the gang all does say their specific catch words at this point.

Speaker B:

We get jinkies from Velma, Jeepers from Daphne, Zoinks from Shaggy and Rut Row from Scooby, and then Dean with Son of a.

Speaker A:

You know, there's also a Tumblr meme that called Fred says fuck, because Fred doesn't have a catchphrase.

Speaker A:

So when they go through, like, jinkers.

Speaker B:

Sheepies.

Speaker A:

Zoinks.

Speaker A:

Ruh.

Speaker A:

Ro.

Speaker A:

Like, what is Fred saying?

Speaker A:

The Fred says fuck.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

So they all get dressed and suddenly.

Speaker B:

And they are going to solve the mystery.

Speaker B:

And Velma's like, we need to look for evidence.

Speaker B:

And Dean is like, this is not how the evidence episode goes.

Speaker B:

What the.

Speaker B:

And Sam's like, yeah, if that guy can die, that means we can die, too.

Speaker B:

And Sam, Dean is upset that Scooby Doo could die, but he's not gonna let that happen, so.

Speaker B:

Not on his watch, anyway.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And so Daphne is like, you know, they're talking about, like, what it could be and this ghost.

Speaker B:

And she's like, what would a ghost need money for?

Speaker B:

And they're like, there's no such thing as ghosts.

Speaker B:

And we do, at this point, see something Walking up towards the window.

Speaker B:

And it pushes through if Fred.

Speaker B:

But Fred jumps ahead before Sam and Dean can intervene and puts a curtain over its head and tackles it.

Speaker B:

And when Dean pulls the curtain off, it is Cassiel.

Speaker B:

And so they have to introduce him to everybody.

Speaker B:

And Castiel is surprised that the dog is talking.

Speaker A:

But.

Speaker B:

But.

Speaker A:

And Shaggy.

Speaker A:

Shaggy thinks that Cassiel sounds like an Italian pizza place.

Speaker A:

He does.

Speaker B:

So Cassiel explains that he was looking for Sam, indeed, at the bunker, because he got the fruit from the Tree of Life and it was guarded by a pack of gin.

Speaker B:

He killed most.

Speaker B:

He bargained with the rest and thinks he is technically married to their queen.

Speaker B:

Now, that's fun.

Speaker B:

But when he looked, he wandered around the bunker looking for them.

Speaker B:

Found Dean's cave.

Speaker B:

Saw the cartoon on TV with Sam and Dean in it.

Speaker B:

So that'd be wild, right?

Speaker B:

Like, he walked into the bunker and he's like.

Speaker B:

Finds this man cave that just appeared, first of all.

Speaker B:

And then he sees Sam and Dean on the television.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And then he gets some purple sparks and he gets sucked into the tv.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

So anyway, so Sam's like, man, this might be connected to that killer stuffed dinosaur.

Speaker B:

So either way, there.

Speaker B:

Velma is very confused about the comment about a killer stuffed dinosaur.

Speaker B:

So they make up a quick cover story that they're writing a book about a killer stuffed dinosaur.

Speaker B:

So it.

Speaker B:

We get the lights flickering and it gets cold suddenly.

Speaker B:

So they have to use lamps and flashlights to search the house.

Speaker B:

And doors are slamming.

Speaker B:

And then we got our hooded ghost dude thing through the door.

Speaker B:

It's the phantasm, is what it is.

Speaker A:

For the record, for the phantom.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And he's.

Speaker B:

Anyways, he knocked.

Speaker B:

We get like, a good scene where he knocks the flashlight out of Sam's hand.

Speaker B:

And Shaggy and Scooby are scared and jump into Castiel's arms.

Speaker B:

Ah, very classic Scooby Doo.

Speaker B:

Cartoony.

Speaker B:

And so Sam and Dean are gonna go after the phantom.

Speaker B:

But Fred jumps ahead and jumps through it and smashes slash.

Speaker B:

This fan phantom thing is slashing the wall.

Speaker B:

It's got claws and they're dodging.

Speaker B:

And Fred goes through it, goes for it again.

Speaker B:

And the phantom goes through the wall.

Speaker B:

And Velma's still not sure it's a ghost.

Speaker A:

But it's probably just a hidden door through the wall.

Speaker B:

Yeah, but it's just going through a wall.

Speaker B:

No big.

Speaker B:

And so anyways, they go into the room it was in.

Speaker B:

And we find a body with a decapitated head on the floor, a torso tied to the ceiling and legs on the other side of the room.

Speaker B:

This is just disturbing a little bit in a cartoon form for some reason.

Speaker B:

That's weirder.

Speaker B:

Is that weirder?

Speaker A:

No, I don't know it.

Speaker A:

But it affects Dean so much that he's almost gonna be sick.

Speaker A:

And the Scooby gang just.

Speaker A:

La la la la la.

Speaker A:

Are they always so nonchalant and just walking away from the dead bodies all the time?

Speaker A:

And Dean's.

Speaker A:

You know what?

Speaker A:

I think this cartoon is haunted.

Speaker B:

You think?

Speaker B:

So they all meet up and Fred's plan is they should split up and look for clues.

Speaker B:

And Sam and Dean are like, no, no, maybe we shouldn't separate.

Speaker B:

We should.

Speaker B:

We can keep you guys safe if we all stay together.

Speaker B:

And Velma does not like that.

Speaker B:

She thinks that Sam is being a chicken like Shaggy.

Speaker B:

And so they.

Speaker B:

Sam and Dean and Castiel have decided they cannot let anything happened to the gang.

Speaker B:

But they are going to follow Fred's lead for now.

Speaker B:

So Dean, Daphne and Fred are going to go off together and Velma and Shaggy.

Speaker B:

Or I'm sorry, Velma and Sam are going to go off together to check the attic.

Speaker B:

And Castiel is.

Speaker B:

Is partnered up with Scooby and Shaggy.

Speaker B:

And Castiel calls.

Speaker B:

Calls them a scruffy philistine and a talking dog.

Speaker B:

So in the attic, Velma's like, sam, this is your first mystery.

Speaker B:

So just try to keep your giant shoulders from knocking over any clues.

Speaker B:

Oh, she obviously has the hots for Sam and his giant shoulders.

Speaker B:

And of course, Sam gets startled by a mannequin.

Speaker B:

And then he's like, look, I'm not supposed to tell you, but ghosts are real and we hunt them.

Speaker B:

And we also hunt werewolves and vampires and demons.

Speaker B:

We save the world a lot of.

Speaker B:

And she laughs at him.

Speaker B:

Because monsters, monsters are.

Speaker B:

Are crooks in masks, like unscrupulous real estate developers.

Speaker B:

And yeah, he's like, but there's way better real estate scams than that.

Speaker B:

So all of a sudden, the creepy toy box starts glowing and the toys start floating and there's goo on the box.

Speaker B:

And so Sam's like ectoplasm.

Speaker B:

And then the toys start flying at them and she's like, no, no, it's totally just Christmas lights and fishing line.

Speaker B:

Couldn't be haunted.

Speaker B:

Couldn't be.

Speaker A:

Meanwhile, Dean is hitting on Daphne yet again and asks what she looks for in a guy.

Speaker A:

And she wants somebody who is strong, sincere, and preferably wears an ascot.

Speaker A:

It's not you, Dee.

Speaker A:

It's not you.

Speaker A:

She is a teenager and is in love with her teenage boyfriend.

Speaker A:

So Dean spots A book that looks out of place pulls it and it's a trap door that leads to slides.

Speaker B:

The slides look fun.

Speaker A:

They do.

Speaker B:

And he tries to use the landing as another excuse to grope Daphne.

Speaker B:

But instead it's not Daphne.

Speaker B:

Is our phantom there?

Speaker B:

And they all yell and run away from him because they're scared.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker B:

And Shaggy and Scooby and Castiel are walking through a.

Speaker B:

A room that's like a really, really haunted looking room compared to the others, weirdly.

Speaker B:

And it gets cold and our phantom is there and they start running and.

Speaker B:

But Cassiel is going to start talking.

Speaker B:

He's like, I've never seen a ghost wear such a ridiculous costume.

Speaker B:

And then he puts his finger through it and then he runs too.

Speaker B:

So everybody's running from the phantom.

Speaker B:

They end up in a hallway.

Speaker B:

And it's like just a really fun classic cartoon scene with a wall, like a hallway full of doors and everybody's running in and out of them.

Speaker B:

Chris Crossy in a way that makes.

Speaker A:

No sense at all as the Scooby Doo theme place.

Speaker A:

There is also a really gross part where Dean male gazes Daphne's ass as she hampers hammers.

Speaker A:

Completely unnecessary to this plot.

Speaker A:

Don't know why they put that in there.

Speaker A:

Then a phantom comes out and Dean grabs Daphne's hand and runs.

Speaker A:

Everyone follows.

Speaker A:

They end up in urns.

Speaker A:

Dean tries to kiss Daphne.

Speaker A:

And then there is a phantom.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And then they all close themselves in a bedroom and Daphne is like, oh, Dean, you almost caught the ghost.

Speaker B:

And Velma's like, there's no such thing.

Speaker B:

She's.

Speaker B:

And then her glasses frost over and the window frosts over and the lights turn off and our phantom appears and Fred just fucking runs at it and just runs at it and gets thrown into a statue and collapses on the ground.

Speaker B:

And then Velma and Daphne get pinned to the ceiling and Shaggy gets thrown out the window.

Speaker B:

This is a very violent iteration of.

Speaker A:

Of the.

Speaker B:

Of Scooby Doo.

Speaker B:

So Sam finds two iron candlesticks, gives one to Dean and they are.

Speaker B:

While Scooby is hiding behind Castiel.

Speaker B:

And they stab the phantom and it disappears.

Speaker B:

So yeah, it's a lot.

Speaker A:

It is.

Speaker B:

And Fred has already knows.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And the boys catch the girls as they unlevitate.

Speaker A:

Shaggy falls off the balcony.

Speaker A:

Scooby jumps after him.

Speaker A:

Then Cassio jumps after Scooby.

Speaker A:

Then they all land on the ground and Shaggy has broken his arm.

Speaker A:

And he doesn't understand what's happening.

Speaker A:

He's like, I jumped out of a biplane in a museum and I was fine.

Speaker A:

And Scooby.

Speaker A:

The Scooby game makes Shaggy a sling.

Speaker A:

And at this point, I'm like, why doesn't Cass heal him?

Speaker B:

It's a good question.

Speaker B:

That's a good question.

Speaker B:

So Sam is like, all right, we're gonna.

Speaker B:

We're gonna tell the truth now about the Phantom.

Speaker B:

And Dean's like, yeah, this isn't, like the other ghost she faced.

Speaker B:

This is real.

Speaker B:

And it's not a mask.

Speaker B:

It's guy in a mask anymore.

Speaker B:

This is a vengeful spirit from the dead.

Speaker B:

And so Velma starts freaking out.

Speaker B:

She's like, wait, so it's true what you told me earlier?

Speaker B:

How could I be so stupid?

Speaker B:

And then Fred's like, what?

Speaker B:

We've been stopping real estate developers when we could have been hunting Dracula?

Speaker B:

And he starts bashing his face against the tree.

Speaker B:

Daphne starts pondering that if there's ghosts, that means there's an afterlife, and is she gonna go to hell?

Speaker B:

And Scooby and Shaggy are freaking out about being doomed.

Speaker B:

So basically, the Scooby gang is having a nervous breakdown in an existential crisis.

Speaker B:

Which is entertaining for cartoons.

Speaker A:

It is.

Speaker A:

And Dean gives them a pep talk, even though all the things he's going to reference have not happened yet.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

But he brings up, like, all these old Scooby things.

Speaker A:

The Black Knight, the Mamba Wamba, the Space Kook, the ghost clown, minor 49er.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And Velma's just worrying that they don't have the proper tunes.

Speaker A:

Tools.

Speaker A:

I don't know.

Speaker A:

I said tunes.

Speaker A:

So they don't have the proper tools.

Speaker A:

And so we're gonna get to see Cartoon Trunk,.

Speaker B:

Which is pretty epic.

Speaker B:

It is.

Speaker A:

Cartoon Trunk is much better organized than real trunk.

Speaker A:

And I like it.

Speaker B:

Yes, it's very neat and very fun.

Speaker B:

So Fred's like, yeah, we've got.

Speaker B:

We're gonna.

Speaker B:

First, Sam tries to hand the shotgun to Velma, and Dean stops him.

Speaker B:

And Fred's like, we're gonna help.

Speaker B:

Y' all are amazing.

Speaker B:

And Dean's like, yeah, Fred, we need you to do what you do best.

Speaker B:

Build a trap.

Speaker B:

So go inside where now Fred looks dish.

Speaker B:

Like, more disheveled because he's lost his ass.

Speaker B:

Got.

Speaker B:

His hair is all up.

Speaker B:

It's like.

Speaker B:

It's like a thing.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker B:

And they.

Speaker B:

He explains the.

Speaker B:

How his trap works that they have that he has laid out for the ghost.

Speaker B:

And I will say it's like a very.

Speaker B:

It's, like, very much like a mousetrap kind of, like, scenario.

Speaker B:

Very entertaining.

Speaker B:

But Daphne salted all the exits except for one.

Speaker B:

So that way, when the phantom comes in, he will trip on the iron chain, which activates the ax to cut the rope to drop the net full of coconuts that will roll and he will trip.

Speaker B:

And then he will careen down a slide of soap into the washing machine, which will be secured with iron chains.

Speaker B:

Sure.

Speaker B:

It's fun, but sure.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker B:

And yeah.

Speaker A:

And his Rube Goldberg machine does not work because Cass and Shaggy and Scooby end up slipping on the coconuts, and they end up in the washing machine machine.

Speaker A:

So it's time for plan B.

Speaker A:

And plan B is Operation Bookworm.

Speaker B:

So they all run, and they get the phantom to follow them to the library, where they pretend to be hiding and get found.

Speaker B:

And Scooby and Shaggy start throwing books at the phantom until they pull the book for the trapdoor.

Speaker B:

And the phantom falls through the trapdoor down.

Speaker B:

I guess he went down the slide, and that's what I wanted to see.

Speaker B:

But he lands in a salt circle where he is trapped.

Speaker B:

And Sam and Dean are like, you need to tell us who you really are.

Speaker B:

And it shrinks into a little boy.

Speaker A:

And creepy ghost kid, but you get used to him.

Speaker A:

But the kid, you know, he said he doesn't want to hurt anyone, but the bad dude made him do stuff.

Speaker A:

And we find out that he's attached to a pocket knife, which I always find it weird, the attachment to objects that are like.

Speaker A:

Especially things that aren't really fabric, and they're metal.

Speaker A:

Like, how do you get attached to metal?

Speaker A:

And how are you going to be burned off of metal?

Speaker A:

Anyways, so Dean tells him that if they can get him back to the real world, they can set him free.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And.

Speaker B:

And, yeah, so.

Speaker B:

And the kids, like, okay, fine, but Sam and Dean are so.

Speaker B:

Sam, Dean and Castiel are, like, looking.

Speaker B:

And they're like, what the.

Speaker B:

The gang is totally freaking out, and they're about to come in.

Speaker B:

So they're Dean's like, okay, okay, creepy ghost kid.

Speaker B:

We need a favor from you before we send, you know, take.

Speaker B:

Let you.

Speaker B:

Release you from this.

Speaker B:

And so the gang runs in, and I like that they all kill it with fire.

Speaker B:

But we see all they see is a kind of like a.

Speaker B:

The.

Speaker B:

What looks like the fan.

Speaker B:

The phantom's robes kind of over this figure on the floor.

Speaker B:

And Dean's like, oh, we were wrong.

Speaker B:

Velma.

Speaker B:

And Sam's like, yeah, Velma was right.

Speaker B:

It's not a real ghost.

Speaker B:

And they pull the phantom mask off of this body that's tied up on the floor, and it's Cosgrove creeps the attorney the bad guy all along.

Speaker A:

So then they come up with logical explanations for everything that happened.

Speaker A:

Projectors.

Speaker A:

Dummies filled with corn syrup dissolve these things to make it make sense.

Speaker A:

Fred deduces that Causgood was trying to get the house and the money for himself.

Speaker A:

But Dean brings out the suitcase of cash, which is all Confederate dollars.

Speaker A:

Dollars.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And Scooby just laughs it off.

Speaker B:

And so Velma's like, I knew I was right.

Speaker B:

There's no such thing as the supernatural.

Speaker B:

And then.

Speaker B:

And then Castiel decides to go heal Shaggy's arm at this point.

Speaker B:

Not earlier, but now.

Speaker B:

That's weird.

Speaker A:

Yep, that's weird.

Speaker A:

But Fred just wants to go to the malt shop to celebrate.

Speaker B:

Man, I love a malt anyway.

Speaker A:

I could use a malt and some fries.

Speaker A:

That'd be really good.

Speaker B:

I just really like a malt, man.

Speaker A:

I don't know.

Speaker B:

I didn't.

Speaker B:

I'm not supposed to have one because I'm trying to get rid of this cough.

Speaker A:

Damn it.

Speaker B:

All right, so Dean's gonna be real creepy saying bye to Daphne because he can't help himself, apparently.

Speaker B:

Then he just can't let it go.

Speaker B:

But Castiel is going to miss the wise words and gentle spirits of Shaggy and Scooby and his who have demonstrated the strength of laughter in the face of danger.

Speaker B:

Very point poignant farewell to Shaggy and Scooby.

Speaker B:

And Velma is gonna go for it for her big lug.

Speaker B:

She's gonna swoop Sam into a dip and plant a big old kiss on him because she loves those shoulders.

Speaker B:

So the gang is gonna walk away.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker B:

Hold on.

Speaker A:

Dean.

Speaker A:

Dean.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Dean douches it out because we can't be done with douche Dean.

Speaker A:

The douche.

Speaker A:

Dean says he should have known it was Velma who was good to go.

Speaker A:

It's always the quiet ones.

Speaker A:

At that point.

Speaker A:

He should have just been punched in the dick.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I just.

Speaker B:

I just try to ignore that one.

Speaker A:

Ew.

Speaker B:

So the.

Speaker B:

Our creepy ghost kid zaps Sam, Dean, and Castiel back to Dean's cave.

Speaker B:

And Dean is just tripping out how that was the coolest thing that's ever happened to him.

Speaker B:

Including the.

Speaker B:

The Cartwright twins.

Speaker B:

Nope.

Speaker B:

Castiel wants to.

Speaker A:

Stop it.

Speaker C:

Stop it.

Speaker A:

I'm just done.

Speaker B:

I'm done.

Speaker A:

Stop it.

Speaker A:

D. Just like.

Speaker A:

Just someone just get him and just like.

Speaker A:

I don't know.

Speaker A:

Someone's just gonna tackle him and, like, just be.

Speaker A:

Just slap him.

Speaker A:

Slap her around and be like, you were fine last week.

Speaker A:

What the happened to You.

Speaker A:

Why is this coming back?

Speaker A:

I know.

Speaker A:

Like, I know part of this episode took a year, but Dean does not need to regress this much.

Speaker A:

This is just too much anyways.

Speaker B:

Okay, It's a lot.

Speaker B:

And, like, we haven't seen this Dean in a long like.

Speaker B:

Like, we've getting snippets of it, but not like this.

Speaker B:

It was a lot.

Speaker B:

Not a lot.

Speaker A:

I'm not a whole episode of it.

Speaker A:

And so it's just too much.

Speaker A:

Okay, so Dean comes back in with a blow tour.

Speaker A:

And also, this also makes me mad.

Speaker A:

Okay, so he comes in with a blowtorch and a hat and a sledgehammer and he smashes the tv.

Speaker A:

Which is stupid.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Because clearly the pocket knife got in the TV by Jay.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

He's not a supernatural person.

Speaker A:

He just put a pocket knife in a tv.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

You.

Speaker B:

How.

Speaker B:

A.

Speaker B:

How did you get the.

Speaker B:

What.

Speaker B:

What slot on the TV is large enough to drop that in?

Speaker B:

B.

Speaker B:

Because he just drops it.

Speaker B:

And we show him dropping in A nonchalantly.

Speaker B:

That we see that.

Speaker B:

But B, like how.

Speaker B:

I mean, turn it upside down.

Speaker A:

You have to come out.

Speaker B:

There has to be a way for it to get back out without smashing.

Speaker A:

Came and they went in and come out.

Speaker A:

I don't know.

Speaker A:

I just think you ruined a tv.

Speaker A:

You ruined a TV for no reason.

Speaker A:

Sorry.

Speaker B:

It was extreme.

Speaker B:

Extreme.

Speaker B:

So, yeah, they.

Speaker B:

They pull the pocket knife and the boy appears and he's like.

Speaker B:

And they're like, it's time to go.

Speaker B:

We're gonna take care of the bad man.

Speaker B:

And Sam has the knife on a little metal tray and torches it.

Speaker B:

And we see the boy burn up.

Speaker B:

But I'm confused because I thought if they did that, then they don't go to the afterlife.

Speaker A:

They don't.

Speaker A:

You just torched a little boy.

Speaker B:

You just.

Speaker A:

You just killed his soul.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I don't like it.

Speaker A:

I don't like this.

Speaker B:

I mean, they freed him.

Speaker B:

That's true.

Speaker A:

They freed him.

Speaker A:

Yeah, He.

Speaker A:

But he's not going to heaven.

Speaker A:

And, like, this poor kid just wanted to see his dad.

Speaker A:

Ain't gonna see his dad.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

See the big empty or whatever.

Speaker B:

Like, where's the reaper?

Speaker B:

Come on.

Speaker A:

Now there's no reaper for him because he gets burnt up.

Speaker B:

I don't know.

Speaker B:

It's weird.

Speaker A:

I think if the reaper had come and taken him, it would have been different.

Speaker A:

But because he got burnt up, he go, he just burnt up.

Speaker B:

Now he's just gone.

Speaker A:

He's gone.

Speaker A:

And they're happy about it.

Speaker A:

Whatever.

Speaker A:

All right, so we're gonna go to the pawn shop?

Speaker B:

Yeah, because Jay is about to convince our pawn shop operator to sell it to him for a steal because he is tired of this and he is gonna retire.

Speaker B:

So, luckily, Sam, Dean, and Castiel interrupt this shady real estate deal going down, which is a nice parallel for Scooby Doo.

Speaker B:

And Dean is wearing a red satin ascot, I would like to note.

Speaker B:

And Sam informs the guy at the shop's name's Alan.

Speaker B:

Informs him that Jay has used a ghost to drive people off all their properties to buy it on the cheap by using a haunted object to possess something and scare people and.

Speaker B:

Until they get desperate to sell.

Speaker B:

And that's why he sent it to us, because we got nosy.

Speaker B:

And now the spirit's been freed.

Speaker B:

But Jay's like, whatever, that's a lie.

Speaker B:

And anyways, no one would believe you.

Speaker B:

And they're like, correct.

Speaker B:

No one would believe us.

Speaker B:

Guess what?

Speaker B:

We hacked your financials.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker A:

In the meantime.

Speaker B:

What?

Speaker A:

No.

Speaker B:

No big.

Speaker B:

And apparently, he doesn't like to pay his taxes.

Speaker B:

So we hear sirens outside, and we watch Jay get arrested for, I don't know, tax evasion.

Speaker A:

For tax evasion.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And Sam's like, yeah, Velma was right.

Speaker A:

It was.

Speaker B:

It was a shady real estate developer after all.

Speaker B:

And Jay does give us the line that we all want when he says,.

Speaker A:

I would have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for those meddling kids.

Speaker A:

Which makes Dean so happy.

Speaker A:

And it makes him so happy that he says, scooby Dooby Doo.

Speaker A:

And everyone's like.

Speaker A:

Like, you're not Scooby.

Speaker A:

You're not a talking dog.

Speaker A:

Just let it go.

Speaker A:

Just let it go, man.

Speaker A:

Elsa the.

Speaker B:

Correct.

Speaker A:

And it ends with Dean.

Speaker A:

Yeah, well, it ends with Dean asking how he looks in his ascot.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Yep.

Speaker A:

That's our episode.

Speaker B:

All right.

Speaker A:

So let's talk about some cast people.

Speaker A:

Casting Couch is the cast couch.

Speaker C:

Were they on that show that time with that guy?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

So we have a few folks that are really interesting because.

Speaker B:

Well, so first off, the Scooby Doo cast voices in this are the ones that have been doing Scooby Doo cast voices or character acting for quite a while at this point.

Speaker B:

So Fred.

Speaker B:

The guy that does the voice of Fred and Scooby Doo is Frank Welker.

Speaker B:

nd he's done this voice since:

Speaker B:

He's done so much voice work that it almost crashed IMDb when I was looking at it.

Speaker B:

So I'm not going to go through all of it, but I'll give you a few other highlights of things you may have heard him in or that I thought were entertaining.

Speaker B:

He's obviously done.

Speaker B:

He's done.

Speaker B:

He did Megatron in the Transformers movie.

Speaker B:

He's been in the Simpsons Nibbler and Futurama.

Speaker B:

He was a Stripe, Mogwai and Gremlins in the original Gremlins movie.

Speaker B:

He did the voices of Abu and Raja in Aladdin and all the follow on versions of Aladdin, the Disney movies.

Speaker B:

And just so he was the voice of the thing in the golden child in the 80s.

Speaker B:

There's like.

Speaker B:

Like so many voices and interesting credits that you know, it just take.

Speaker B:

It's amazing.

Speaker B:

So shout out to him.

Speaker B:

The voice of Daphne is done by Gray Delisle.

Speaker B:

She's been doing this the voice of Daphne for.

Speaker B:

Since about:

Speaker B:

She's been actually in episodes of that 70s show, but she's done voice work for, you know, Dexter's Lab, Rugrats.

Speaker B:

She did Two Birds in the Boys and then she's done Simpsons.

Speaker B:

She's the voice of Martin and a couple of voices in the new iteration of King of the Hill.

Speaker B:

Shaggy is voice is by Matthew Lillard.

Speaker B:

versions but basically since:

Speaker B:

I. I will.

Speaker B:

Because Matthew Lillard is a pretty major actor.

Speaker B:

I'm gonna go through a few of his credits because we all know him but he's Eric in Mad Love.

Speaker A:

He has the creepiest longest fingers.

Speaker A:

They just.

Speaker A:

They grow.

Speaker A:

I don't know, they just creep me out.

Speaker A:

They're too long.

Speaker B:

He's serial in Hackers.

Speaker B:

He's Stuart in scream, Stevo and SLC Punk, Brock and She's all that.

Speaker B:

He's in 13 Ghosts and then more recently the Five Nights at Freddy's series of films.

Speaker B:

He's been.

Speaker B:

He's been the first two and then the third one is forthcoming.

Speaker B:

He's also been a lot of TV episodes as well, which is interesting.

Speaker B:

Law and Order, SVU House, Criminal Minds and other shows too.

Speaker B:

Reoccurring character on the series Bosch and more recently there was a series, it was on Amazon called Up for Carry.

Speaker B:

And he's the principal in that as a reoccurring character.

Speaker B:

is voice appears around since:

Speaker B:

She's been in as an actress episodes of Malcolm in the Middle, How I Met yout Mother, Scrubs, Weeds, Big Bang Theory, Will and Grace.

Speaker B:

She's also a regular.

Speaker B:

She was a regular character on the series Raising Hope named Shelley.

Speaker B:

She's done other voice work as well.

Speaker B:

Oh she's also a movie in Clerks 3, but she's done voice work on Monster High and and some other stuff too.

Speaker B:

So then our Phantom was voiced by well noised I don't know by D. Bradley Baker who's done work on American Dad, Phineas and Ferb.

Speaker B:

He was the voice of Daffy in Space Jam.

Speaker B:

Our cousin that gets killed at the beginning was done it was voiced by Eric Bowser who's done work in Transformers, Rick and Morty and Bob's Burgers.

Speaker B:

And then he does the voice work in the for Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in the new movie Coyote vs. Acme.

Speaker B:

Cause good Creeps was voiced by Stephen Stanton.

Speaker B:

He does Fiero's horse sounds in the Wicked movies and also is Stan L. Brooks in the Joker.

Speaker B:

I'm gonna say it wrong.

Speaker B:

I don't do French that one.

Speaker B:

The new Joker the second Joker movie and has did was the Admiral in Andor in Rogue One our Colonel Sanders voice was Fred Tatascuri and he does the voice of Samuel L. Jackson in Team America World Police, the Panda dad in Kung Fu Panda 2 and Megatron in Transformers Fall of Cybertron.

Speaker B:

And Jay our our, our real estate bad guy was played by Peter New.

Speaker B:

He is a character in School Spirits.

Speaker B:

Mr. Mr. Smith In School Spirits about eight episodes of that he plays a couple a character in Back Rooms, the new newer kind of psychological thriller that came out and has been in episodes of Murder in a Small town, Tracker, Riverdale, iZombie, Fringe and has done us some voice work in some anime.

Speaker B:

Yeah, it's a lot.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Cool.

Speaker B:

Quite a cast.

Speaker B:

It is.

Speaker A:

That was a lot of people.

Speaker A:

And before we get into kind of like our thoughts and Diana's thoughts about Scooby Doo, I thought it'd be fun to talk about some of the differences between episode and the original Scooby Doo episode which I did watch Hot spotting off my phone today while I was sitting in an empty house because I had nothing else to do.

Speaker A:

So most of these though are from TV tropes.

Speaker A:

So one of the things so in this one, Colonel Beauregard dies of cancer.

Speaker A:

Cancer wasn't really something that was ever really discussed on Scooby Doo.

Speaker B:

They were.

Speaker A:

They weren't big on the cancer.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I was gonna say that seemed out of place.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Mystery Inc. Read a newspaper article about Colonel Bogard's death and in the cartoon they were just they just arrived on an island on a speedboat.

Speaker A:

And so that is something else that was different on the Cartoon.

Speaker A:

This was on an island and it was not reachable by car, which makes sense.

Speaker A:

So if you want to have baby in it that you would have of change it.

Speaker A:

So it was ritual by car.

Speaker A:

There is some pipe organ and some tunnels that got left out.

Speaker A:

Daphne is very physically exaggerated compared to her in the cartoon.

Speaker A:

To play up the.

Speaker A:

The.

Speaker A:

The deemness of things say that the girl sleepwear also would not have happened until the more recent movies.

Speaker A:

It wouldn't, you know, they wouldn't be in 90s and in the.

Speaker A:

In the 70s and the original Cuthbert Crawls and Cosgrood Creeps were both exposed as a green ghost and arrested by the end of the episode.

Speaker A:

So those were our bad guys in it.

Speaker A:

But of course in Supernatural, Cuthbert died horribly and we don't know what happened.

Speaker A:

Not Cuthbert Koska died horribly and we don't know what happened to Cuthbert.

Speaker A:

Obviously the side plot of Velma wanting Sam is new.

Speaker A:

But Velma having a thing for big strong types was also something that was established in later iterations of Scooby Doo.

Speaker A:

She wasn't that horny to begin with.

Speaker A:

There has never been a dismembered and decapitated body in any official animated incarnation of Scooby Doo.

Speaker A:

Just, you know, no, no, no heads popping off.

Speaker A:

It was implied in the real episode that the house itself really was haunted.

Speaker A:

And then just some fun things.

Speaker A:

Easter eggs from the show.

Speaker A:

Writers Jim Krueger and Jeremy Adams made background appearances at the end when they watched Jay get arrested.

Speaker A:

And there is also a mini Mystery Machine hidden in all the live action scenes.

Speaker A:

It first appears on top of a record player near the entrance to the pawn shop.

Speaker A:

Then next you can see in the Dean Cave on a shelf next to some albums.

Speaker A:

Yeah, that's fun.

Speaker B:

I love good Easter eggs.

Speaker A:

Yeah, good.

Speaker A:

There were some good Easter eggs and just, you know, some.

Speaker A:

So, okay, so this leads into talking about the episode.

Speaker A:

And like I said, I watched the original Scooby do.

Speaker A:

Then you know, after I watched the original Scooby Doo, after I watched this episode, which of course I'd already seen before.

Speaker A:

But so getting to see that juxtaposition of really what was made so much darker for this episode, like that kind of highlighted it for me.

Speaker A:

But I still think they did this out of like all the animated crossovers that could happen, I think that Scooby Doo is just making makes sense for the show.

Speaker A:

Like, I think this makes like as far as those crossovers go, like I can't, you know, like what you're not.

Speaker A:

Obviously they're not going to do like the Jetsons or anything like that, but I think this, I think it made a lot of sense.

Speaker B:

No, I, I would agree.

Speaker B:

I think this does make a sense as a crossover and I thought it was fun and I think, you know, it totally fits the characters of Salmon Dean.

Speaker B:

I will not harp on it, but I will sidebar that I'm not a huge Scooby Doo fan, but I'm not being killjoy.

Speaker B:

It was a fun episode anyways.

Speaker B:

I'm just not like, I wouldn't know that episode before, but I'm aware.

Speaker B:

Well, I mean, in the gang are.

Speaker A:

It's also an episode from 19.

Speaker A:

Yeah, it's an episode from:

Speaker A:

So unless you watch the original Scooby Doo's, which a lot of people have.

Speaker A:

But I mean, clearly that's not your age group.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker B:

Now, but I wouldn't have watched it then even if I was in this two video.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

But.

Speaker B:

Yeah, so either way, I mean, they still made it fun.

Speaker B:

They didn't.

Speaker B:

I thought they.

Speaker B:

I thought they did a really good.

Speaker B:

From what I know of Scooby Doo because I haven't watched any of the newer versions at all.

Speaker B:

They did a really fun version.

Speaker B:

It was enough that they, they did all the big stuff where I still understood what it was, what was happening.

Speaker B:

And so that was fun.

Speaker B:

I mean, as far as like the, the homage and the tie ins.

Speaker B:

That's what I mean.

Speaker B:

Like, I'm not, I don't live under a rock.

Speaker B:

I'm just not like a super fan of Scooby Doo.

Speaker B:

But it made so much sense and it made for a really fun episode, you know.

Speaker B:

And like you said, it took so long to make it that that's why it doesn't really carry into our storyline much.

Speaker B:

Except for the Castiel in the real world scene.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

And I do wish though, like that they had taken advantage of the cartoon world a little bit more.

Speaker A:

We obviously got some fun things like we had Dean and the sandwich.

Speaker A:

But I would have liked to have seen some more cartoon exaggerated things, you know, some more like, you know, Jaws on the floor type, you know, as you're running around a corner, you know, like the just in general really cartoony things that.

Speaker A:

I know Scooby Doo itself wasn't that physical in.

Speaker A:

In his comedy.

Speaker A:

But I think like they did with.

Speaker B:

The slap at the beginning.

Speaker B:

The slap at the beginning was a perfect example of that.

Speaker C:

That.

Speaker B:

And they didn't get.

Speaker A:

I think, I think they could have pulled that.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I think they could have pulled more of that through the episode, and that would have made it a little bit more fun.

Speaker A:

Not saying that needed to be more fun.

Speaker A:

I just think that would have been cool.

Speaker A:

But I, you know, I.

Speaker A:

Obviously there.

Speaker A:

Obviously.

Speaker A:

But I thoroughly enjoyed the episode.

Speaker A:

I think it's a cute one, and I think it's.

Speaker A:

And so it was in:

Speaker A:

TV Guide ranked it 6 out of its top 25 episodes of that year.

Speaker A:

And this episode was the best rated since the season 13 premiere with 2 million viewers.

Speaker A:

So about 20 of the total viewers over the last original episode of the show.

Speaker A:

So it also just did really well.

Speaker A:

And it's, you know, it has just become a classic episode because it really is just fantastically animated.

Speaker A:

And it's this.

Speaker A:

They did a really great job, I think, of mixing the.

Speaker A:

Mixing the two together.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So that's.

Speaker B:

I agree.

Speaker A:

That's our thoughts.

Speaker A:

And on that note.

Speaker A:

All right.

Speaker A:

Cheers.

Speaker A:

Jerk.

Speaker B:

Cheers, bitch.
