00;00;00;26 - 00;00;08;15

Speaker 1

We are so excited to bring you episode two of Devils Trap Podcast or I'm Liz. Tell you why camping sucks.

00;00;08;18 - 00;00;11;00

Speaker 2

And I, Dianna, agree.

00;00;11;02 - 00;00;15;11

Speaker 1

And we're also going to tell you why Dianna cannot stop saying Wendigo.

00;00;15;13 - 00;00;17;03

Speaker 3

Wendigo.

00;00;17;06 - 00;00;28;18

Speaker 1

Then Liz is going to go into the lore and tell you why you should probably stop saying that word so often. Dianna. We're also really going to figure that out. And then finally we're going to figure out.

00;00;28;20 - 00;00;33;04

Speaker 3

Has Diana turned a corner? She's team Sam, is she team Dean or.

00;00;33;04 - 00;00;36;19

Speaker 1

Is she in fact still Team Trunk?

00;00;36;22 - 00;00;38;22

Speaker 2

We shall see. We shall see.

00;00;38;25 - 00;00;58;24

Speaker 1

All right, so let's get this episode going.

00;00;58;26 - 00;01;07;15

Speaker 1

And.

00;01;07;18 - 00;01;14;01

Speaker 1

You.

00;01;14;03 - 00;01;28;10

Speaker 1

Welcome to episode two. Season one, episode two of Devil's Trap podcast, where Liz is recording this with the cat sitting basically on her head. I think Diana, maybe this is a point where you could screenshot this and this would probably.

00;01;28;10 - 00;01;28;24

Speaker 3

Be a good.

00;01;28;26 - 00;01;32;25

Speaker 1

Picture, but this is how I live my life, with a cat sitting on my.

00;01;32;25 - 00;01;34;09

Speaker 3

Head.

00;01;34;11 - 00;01;38;05

Speaker 1

So awesome. All right. So.

00;01;38;05 - 00;01;40;06

Speaker 3

Hey, Diana, how are you today?

00;01;40;08 - 00;01;47;14

Speaker 2

I'm all right. I'm all right. You know, it's an exciting post. Thanksgiving. Fun.

00;01;47;17 - 00;01;48;26

Speaker 3

And,

00;01;48;29 - 00;02;00;25

Speaker 2

You know, making sure our foods and whatnot already. So. And holiday decorations, that's what I'm doing next is going to continue drinking wine and decorate our Christmas tree after this.

00;02;00;25 - 00;02;02;03

Speaker 3

So there we go.

00;02;02;05 - 00;02;06;08

Speaker 1

That sounds really exciting. So, what wine are you drinking tonight?

00;02;06;11 - 00;02;09;04

Speaker 2

I don't want to talk about it. I don't usually drink wine on Thanksgiving.

00;02;09;04 - 00;02;09;28

Speaker 1

Still drinking trash.

00;02;09;28 - 00;02;39;25

Speaker 2

I'm actually. I'm actually not drinking trash wine tonight. We're actually drinking. Right now we're drinking. Got a veggie? They're white wine. It's, a winery Dave and I went to in, Montepulciano, Italy. I made Dave go there to that city specifically when we were in Italy, because while it is not actually the name of the city in twilight, it is the actual city where they shot the Italy, the Volterra scene, because Volterra is a different city in Italy, but they shot the whole tourist scene in Montepulciano.

00;02;39;25 - 00;02;56;10

Speaker 2

And I made him go there, literally pretty. And it was and we love this winery. And they've had his most favorite ham he's ever had in his life there, because they were cutting it off of the the leg and it was black ham and or whatever. Black prosciutto is a big thing. And he was very excited. It made this day.

00;02;56;12 - 00;02;56;22

Speaker 2

And then.

00;02;56;25 - 00;03;13;02

Speaker 1

You actually. Oh, sorry, you made me a candle from this wine. And then you put little pictures, full story in it. So I had to take a picture of I'll take a picture of that and post it online so everyone can see the victory candle that Diane and so craftily made.

00;03;13;06 - 00;03;24;06

Speaker 2

Yeah. Because it's actually the picture on the bottle is the picture of the town square. And so I drew the red, all the red capes on figures there for, for Liz because I know she likes it too. Which we.

00;03;24;06 - 00;03;25;00

Speaker 3

Didn't.

00;03;25;03 - 00;03;46;23

Speaker 1

No, I don't like to. I like I don't know what you're talking about. I've never thought about traveling to forks. I don't I don't know what you're saying. Although I do refuse to read the the new the new book. Where from the Edward's point of view, because Edward was just a bitch. And I have no desire to hear things through his through his brain.

00;03;46;25 - 00;03;47;12

Speaker 3

So I was really.

00;03;47;12 - 00;04;01;21

Speaker 2

Excited and I bought it. And then I read a review from BuzzFeed, which is not my source of, book reviews for the record, typically. But it was so bad that I was like, oh, I don't know if I can do it in the books real long.

00;04;01;23 - 00;04;02;09

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;04;02;11 - 00;04;08;08

Speaker 1

And if you can make Twilight like Twilight was really bad to begin with and then like, you're going to make it worse. Like, how.

00;04;08;08 - 00;04;19;27

Speaker 2

Do drag it out, girls? You're going to make it more dried out, like more depressing because wasn't like book like two, like half of her just being frickin depressed. For like.

00;04;20;03 - 00;04;32;03

Speaker 1

I think that was the one where she just constantly jumped off cliffs because when she jumped off a cliff, then she could see him. But of course, that was after he spent all his time like looking at her and smelling her sweater.

00;04;32;04 - 00;04;33;00

Speaker 2

Talking hair.

00;04;33;02 - 00;04;43;00

Speaker 1

Yeah. So basically, yeah, I read teenage Girls dream. I just want that creepy guy who's what if he doesn't want to talk to me? His major emotional problems.

00;04;43;02 - 00;04;49;20

Speaker 2

And he thinks I'm gross, and then he wants to stalk me, and then he dumps me. That's. That sounds like romance.

00;04;49;22 - 00;04;53;29

Speaker 1

Yeah. I mean, I really like the Cullens, so I like the family.

00;04;54;01 - 00;05;03;17

Speaker 2

Yeah, I do too. I mean, obviously, but. Yeah. So, Yeah, the guy getting the black prosciutto, though, was very Italian and obviously Indian.

00;05;03;19 - 00;05;07;17

Speaker 3

But like, spoke decent English like know.

00;05;07;20 - 00;05;08;12

Speaker 1

It was really.

00;05;08;14 - 00;05;35;10

Speaker 2

It. I'm just saying like he spoke but he spoke English because of his interaction with tourists. It's what he was telling us, which was kind of interesting. And then at some point he was trying to translate something and pulled up the side of his shirt and showed us the edge of his thong. And that was an epic moment at a winery in Italy, while eating black prosciutto and drinking wine at this, this amazing winery in Montepulciano that we want to stay at for hours, but had to hurry back to turn our rental car and drive to Rome.

00;05;35;12 - 00;05;36;05

Speaker 3

But I was.

00;05;36;08 - 00;05;40;04

Speaker 1

So was he trying to show you his thong or was it?

00;05;40;04 - 00;05;45;20

Speaker 2

Yes, it was intentional. He was trying to describe which part of the talk about the pig that the.

00;05;45;23 - 00;05;49;22

Speaker 1

But he wasn't like, here's my thong. He was like, this is where the pig is.

00;05;49;23 - 00;05;52;04

Speaker 2

He touched the thong.

00;05;52;07 - 00;05;53;25

Speaker 1

At least it didn't snap it.

00;05;53;28 - 00;06;12;18

Speaker 2

It did not snap, but he touched it. It was evident as he was trying to describe the black prosciutto to us, which was amazing and is very expensive. If we try to find some broader. And I was very excited to see at Costco the other day that they actually you can buy a big ol like, like prosciutto leg.

00;06;12;20 - 00;06;22;27

Speaker 2

It comes on the cutting board already ready to go, so you can slice off your own prosciutto or whatever. It's Spanish. It's a Spanish ham. So yeah, it was I was pretty excited about that.

00;06;22;29 - 00;06;25;27

Speaker 1

That would be Mon.

00;06;25;29 - 00;06;28;03

Speaker 2

They didn't call it that either. They called it something else stupid.

00;06;28;03 - 00;06;29;07

Speaker 1

I think it was just like, I think.

00;06;29;08 - 00;06;32;16

Speaker 3

It's called Costco. It was just.

00;06;32;16 - 00;06;34;17

Speaker 1

Like slice of pig and they're.

00;06;34;17 - 00;06;38;01

Speaker 3

Like, oh, I love you. So what.

00;06;38;05 - 00;06;40;14

Speaker 1

Is again? Why are we talking about Costco again?

00;06;40;14 - 00;07;02;27

Speaker 2

I don't know, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I like I like Costco, damn it. Anyway, so. Yeah. There we go. So that's my that's my wine selection for tonight. Is that cheese? White wine that I very much enjoy. And then we're going to transition over to some mediocre stuff. We say drink a lot of our good stuff on Thanksgiving with the family, which was stuff from the Hill Country, both, Coleman wineries.

00;07;02;27 - 00;07;20;18

Speaker 2

We went through several bottles of that, including their rosé, which is lovely, and then got into, my sister found a stashed bottle that she had of signature still. So that was exciting news as well. So we've been we got our whole country wine fix too. And then now I'm like, damn it, I'm out of all the good shit.

00;07;20;18 - 00;07;22;29

Speaker 2

So we're on to our big order.

00;07;22;29 - 00;07;24;04

Speaker 3

From Port Wine.

00;07;24;06 - 00;07;25;25

Speaker 2

Not Costco, but total wine today.

00;07;26;00 - 00;07;50;16

Speaker 1

Yeah, I like when people bring me booze. Which, sadly, my grocery delivery service was slow tonight because we had a bunch of power outages, because we had an awesome rainy day, very, very spooky day. But unfortunately, that meant the power went out. So I did not get my family business beer delivered tonight. It'll probably show up in the middle of this podcast, and you'll hear me slam down the computer and run to get it.

00;07;50;16 - 00;08;09;08

Speaker 1

But so instead, I'm drinking another Austin beer that's, thirsty go. That's made from Thirsty Planet, sir. Amber ale. It's my go to beer because it is delicious. Probably too delicious, but. And I am drinking it out of, my bitch pint glass, so you can.

00;08;09;08 - 00;08;13;28

Speaker 3

See that, Diana. So, yes, I like it.

00;08;14;00 - 00;08;21;09

Speaker 1

So hopefully the drinking beer won't be belching directly into the microphone. I'll try and do that to the side like the lady that I am.

00;08;21;11 - 00;08;22;21

Speaker 3

Of course.

00;08;22;24 - 00;08;24;11

Speaker 1

So, are we ready?

00;08;24;13 - 00;08;37;16

Speaker 2

Yeah, let's do it. So we got into, season one, episode two, and, you know, I, I spent time watching this, by myself yesterday.

00;08;37;19 - 00;08;38;21

Speaker 3

In the garden.

00;08;38;24 - 00;08;43;02

Speaker 2

No, it was daytime. Sorry. It was in the morning.

00;08;43;04 - 00;08;43;14

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;08;43;19 - 00;08;52;08

Speaker 2

I got up in the morning and, let let let the husband sleep in and watched my episode of supernatural and made lots of notes in my fancy notebook that that has got me, by the.

00;08;52;08 - 00;08;56;17

Speaker 3

Way, so that all kinds of notes here. But yeah.

00;08;56;17 - 00;09;14;08

Speaker 2

So, I'll, I'll let Liz lead off and I have some, some tidbits to, to add in. And I promise, I want to say up front, my, some of mine are somewhat critical. I just want to be upfront that I am enjoying it to an extent. So far, I'm just not. It's just hard to watch a show that's a little bit.

00;09;14;10 - 00;09;32;27

Speaker 2

Data sets are dated now. Yeah, obviously they're dated. And you know, and it's still a show building and I know that these all these kind of shows, the characters build the story, builds the quality, builds all those things. So just upfront, I'm not trying to oh my oh my critical comments are not all.

00;09;33;00 - 00;09;33;17

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;09;33;19 - 00;09;34;25

Speaker 1

Your judgment is.

00;09;34;27 - 00;09;36;23

Speaker 2

Just making notes as I go.

00;09;36;23 - 00;09;39;07

Speaker 1

Yeah, yeah. Don't be a dick, Diana.

00;09;39;07 - 00;09;41;23

Speaker 3

You know I'm not, I promise. So yeah.

00;09;41;26 - 00;09;58;16

Speaker 1

th,:

00;09;58;18 - 00;09;59;28

Speaker 3

00;10;00;00 - 00;10;21;08

Speaker 1

So really not too much to go on the back back end of the episode here. I think we can just jump right into talking about it as we go. Yeah, so we start off, in we're in Black Water Ridge, Lost Creek, Colorado, which to quote my one of my favorite podcast, Morbid Fresh Air, is for dead people.

00;10;21;11 - 00;10;48;13

Speaker 1

So we open up on a camping ground. We have two tents that are there. And so according to Wikipedia, the, the Lost Creek Wilderness is 119,790 acre wilderness area located in central Colorado, south of the town of Bailey, with a town that is and the area is situated entirely within the boundaries of the Pike National Forest.

00;10;48;15 - 00;11;02;04

Speaker 1

I am not a camper. I don't mind a glamping. I'm an outdoor person, but I want a toilet and a shower. So right off the bat, I'm just like, well, you're in the woods. You're going to get something happen to.

00;11;02;04 - 00;11;25;12

Speaker 2

You I like I'd like to point out that reasons camping sucks is in my notes. So I, I mean, I'm on the same page as you. I love the outdoors. I love the sights, I like, I like nature. I did go camping quite a bit as a kid, but usually with my family. We like campsites at a lake, and we go out on the boat all day, and then we'd have like a shower, but not fancy, you know?

00;11;25;13 - 00;11;44;28

Speaker 2

But there's a shower and a toilet. Also, as we've discussed a little bit before, I don't love the dark, so that doesn't really bode well for camping at night. And I will also place partial blame on my military background because I was in the Army. They are capable of making any fun activity. Not fun, including camping.

00;11;45;06 - 00;11;58;12

Speaker 2

So, Yeah, that's, camping is not my jam, but, you know, that's. There we go. So it starts off with the camping, and I have a couple notes when we get there, but I'll let you I'll let you talk a little bit about it, too, so.

00;11;58;15 - 00;12;17;26

Speaker 1

Sure, sure. So we have, two tents. There's a campfire burning because they didn't put this out before they went to bed, which I guess is a thing, but I'm like, that seems dangerous. I don't want I don't want to burn down Colorado, but that's just me. And we see guys playing video games and one of those is, Cory Monteith.

00;12;17;26 - 00;12;18;09

Speaker 1

Monteith.

00;12;18;09 - 00;12;21;11

Speaker 2

Exactly. Yeah. Monteith. Who was from Glee.

00;12;21;14 - 00;12;21;29

Speaker 3

And.

00;12;22;02 - 00;12;24;00

Speaker 2

Sweet bandana.

00;12;24;02 - 00;12;42;19

Speaker 1

we all know, he sadly died in:

00;12;42;21 - 00;12;44;01

Speaker 3

I loved him.

00;12;44;03 - 00;13;05;07

Speaker 1

Yeah, he's a sweet guy. So we have this one tent, and then there's a growling outside, and then we go into another tent where, Tommy, who was played by Graham Wardle. So Graham Wardle is actually from a super secret guilty pleasure of mine, the show that's filmed in Canada called heartland. And it's.

00;13;05;07 - 00;13;07;13

Speaker 3

A it's basically.

00;13;07;13 - 00;13;19;06

Speaker 1

Like a Canadian hallmark show that's about a girl who's a horse whisperer. And so it's just all about horses and the hardship on the ranch up there. It's beautiful. And he plays her love interest.

00;13;19;10 - 00;13;22;04

Speaker 2

You were embarrassed about talking about Twilight.

00;13;22;06 - 00;13;29;01

Speaker 1

But yeah, I got to talk about heartland and the way she makes ponies down. Okay, it's got ponies. And,

00;13;29;03 - 00;13;42;04

Speaker 2

I'm gonna. I just want to backtrack. You mentioned the video games. I was going to point out they were roughing it hard, and it's been out there for six days, and they're freaking gameboys whatever the hell they were playing, we still had power. I just find that a little questionable.

00;13;42;07 - 00;13;42;26

Speaker 3

But I.

00;13;42;26 - 00;13;44;16

Speaker 1

Guess those are probably.

00;13;44;18 - 00;13;47;13

Speaker 2

Those are the ones where you pop out the battery. You'd have to charge it. Yeah.

00;13;47;15 - 00;13;53;13

Speaker 1

I think I don't know, but how are they communicating with each other? I don't know, I'm not a video game person.

00;13;53;15 - 00;14;09;13

Speaker 2

I was I don't know, I'm like, I kind of know like real video games and we can talk about a Sega Genesis. And then I kind of conceptually get modern stuff where it's all like web based and you charge it, but it's basically like a fancy phone at that point. But there we go. I was I was questioning their ability to play video games and use their SAT phone.

00;14;09;13 - 00;14;11;08

Speaker 2

Still with being their first.

00;14;11;09 - 00;14;17;15

Speaker 1

That one, the sat phone, I could see it because I probably had a charger on it. So generally SAT phones are made to be out in the.

00;14;17;15 - 00;14;20;15

Speaker 2

Wilderness in time. Yeah, that's true when you turn it off when you're not using it.

00;14;20;17 - 00;14;32;14

Speaker 1

So yeah, but he's also getting damn good reception on a phone and able to send video messages like, tell me, what's that phone you have? Because I want to take that to the rich.

00;14;32;20 - 00;14;33;06

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;14;33;08 - 00;14;43;17

Speaker 2

It's like some I've worked in, like some places that had like sat phones and they were not that fancy. And it was probably later in a time frame than this show was shot.

00;14;43;19 - 00;14;50;12

Speaker 1

Yeah. But you know, I guess Tommy, Tommy got some good money when his parents died and but but again, sat phone I guess.

00;14;50;13 - 00;15;00;27

Speaker 2

Certainly. So. All right. I'll, I'll, I digress I'll leave it. I will go back to what we talked about, the, the camping setup in the two tents. They got the fire. Go and go for it.

00;15;00;29 - 00;15;16;23

Speaker 1

Okay. So then the guy whose names I don't know, I just have him as guy. Maybe that's his name. He goes outside to pee on a tree and then he hears. Scary thing. So this is probably found a reason why camping sucks. You had to go pee on a tree.

00;15;16;25 - 00;15;30;15

Speaker 1

And if you're a girl, peeing outside is problematic because you have to make sure that you're squatting and you don't pee on your shoes. It's your pants or your pants, and it takes a lot of dexterity. So.

00;15;30;18 - 00;15;31;21

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;15;31;24 - 00;15;40;01

Speaker 1

So then, you know, there's scary noises and Gary pokes his head outside and then he gets eaten or something.

00;15;40;01 - 00;15;41;26

Speaker 2

I mean, we know and.

00;15;41;29 - 00;15;43;11

Speaker 1

I know, I mean, he got.

00;15;43;18 - 00;15;47;08

Speaker 2

There's a lot of there's a lot of rustling and screaming and blood.

00;15;47;08 - 00;15;50;06

Speaker 3

So would make sense. Right. All right.

00;15;50;12 - 00;16;04;06

Speaker 1

So then there's a bunch of scary outside tent action. And which also freaks me out about tents in the woods at night when there's a campfire and there's a shadow on the outside and it's just a tree branch, but, you know, it could be a Wendigo.

00;16;04;07 - 00;16;05;11

Speaker 2

You have a monster.

00;16;05;17 - 00;16;24;23

Speaker 1

Or a monster or a serial killer or a person or a bunny. You just don't know what is making those shadows now. So Tommy then looks really like he has to poop. And then there are claws that go down the tent walls, and then we're assuming that Tommy gets munched.

00;16;24;25 - 00;16;30;09

Speaker 3

Or does he? Done, done done. All right.

00;16;30;12 - 00;16;33;25

Speaker 1

So anything else about why camping is lame at this point?

00;16;33;28 - 00;16;37;03

Speaker 2

Oh no. Not yet. That's that's I think that covers most of it.

00;16;37;06 - 00;16;39;20

Speaker 3

Okay. So I mean, our point.

00;16;39;22 - 00;16;59;19

Speaker 1

You made our point and we'll probably come back to it again. All right. So now we're going to switch. And the television tells us that we're back in Palo Alto, and Sam is in a suit at a grave and looking at Jessica's grave, he sadly says, you always said roses are lame, because they are. They really, really are.

00;16;59;22 - 00;17;07;17

Speaker 1

I don't want I never want to get roses. They smell bad. They smell like old ladies. I hate all things gross smell.

00;17;07;19 - 00;17;08;08

Speaker 3

00;17;08;11 - 00;17;14;13

Speaker 1

You're a much earlier girl than I am. I thought the bouquet he had was lovely, so it was.

00;17;14;13 - 00;17;17;18

Speaker 2

A very little. It has a nice little leaves in it. I'm just. I'm not.

00;17;17;21 - 00;17;18;14

Speaker 3

I.

00;17;18;17 - 00;17;26;15

Speaker 2

Don't I don't have, like, strong feelings, like anti any specific flower except my sister is hardcore anti carnation. That's her thing. It's crazy.

00;17;26;16 - 00;17;28;06

Speaker 1

Oh it's kind of a shitty flower.

00;17;28;09 - 00;17;28;21

Speaker 3

It is.

00;17;28;21 - 00;17;39;16

Speaker 1

But yeah. And she was also in a probably a bunch of things where you had to do carnations like sororities and other girl things I don't know about. But yeah, I can see that there's.

00;17;39;21 - 00;17;40;01

Speaker 2

So.

00;17;40;05 - 00;17;42;18

Speaker 1

So Sam says some sadness. Yeah.

00;17;42;25 - 00;17;50;23

Speaker 2

And he talks about being able to. Oh, he promised he'd keep her there. They replayed the part where he says he promised to keep her safe and oops.

00;17;50;25 - 00;17;53;06

Speaker 3

Oops. Yep. And then a.

00;17;53;06 - 00;17;54;18

Speaker 2

Really big promise to make.

00;17;54;18 - 00;18;10;09

Speaker 1

And you should never make that promise. It's a little too much to promise somebody, so. But then, poof, a hand comes out of the ground and they fold you and we're in, baby. Because it was just a dream. It was all a dream.

00;18;10;11 - 00;18;10;19

Speaker 3

Did you.

00;18;10;22 - 00;18;16;17

Speaker 2

Really jumped? Hell, yeah. Yeah. Are you fucking kidding me? Now, we've discussed this. I'm very jumpy.

00;18;16;19 - 00;18;18;01

Speaker 3

Very. Okay.

00;18;18;03 - 00;18;43;09

Speaker 1

So in the in the Netflix version, when he wakes up, there is a band named Steve Fisher playing shit. Eight and lonesome. But in the original airing, it was foreigner, hot blooded. And then I started looking through things and pretty much. So I'm not going to do this on every episode, but they have switched the music for all of the Netflix episodes from what was originally aired, and there is much better rock played in the original.

00;18;43;09 - 00;18;50;20

Speaker 1

Not that the independent ones aren't, so I'm going to assume that, and that folks did not want to cough up the money for the licensing.

00;18;50;25 - 00;18;59;27

Speaker 2

Yeah. Because I was looking up to I was I was like, I wanna look back at the music that was in this one. I'm like, that's not what I heard. Wait a minute. So yeah.

00;18;59;29 - 00;19;20;03

Speaker 1

Yeah. And I thought about it was like, well, do I just go and buy all the originals and watch them that way? But then I figured that everybody who was watching this along with us is likely watching it on Netflix. Some people may have a DVD player. I think I actually have DVDs of this somewhere buried in boxes.

00;19;20;03 - 00;19;34;20

Speaker 1

I don't have a DVD player, but somewhere I think I have DVDs of those. But anyway, so, let's just say that we're probably going to talk that much about music in these episodes because it's not the original music. So.

00;19;34;22 - 00;19;35;07

Speaker 3

00;19;35;10 - 00;19;36;14

Speaker 1

And this is really fun.

00;19;36;14 - 00;19;38;10

Speaker 2

I'm. But it was like.

00;19;38;12 - 00;19;38;21

Speaker 3

It was.

00;19;38;21 - 00;19;46;15

Speaker 2

Fine. It wasn't like I was like, oh, this song is awesome. I need to look this up. But it wasn't. I'm not no knock. I just didn't stand out.

00;19;46;15 - 00;19;48;26

Speaker 3

Put it that way. Yeah.

00;19;48;29 - 00;20;01;13

Speaker 1

So Sam wakes up. Yeah. And Sam is refusing to talk about his nightmare. Dean says, hey, you know, I'll even let you drive. And then Sam does continues being a bitch. And he says no.

00;20;01;15 - 00;20;02;26

Speaker 3

So yeah.

00;20;02;26 - 00;20;09;03

Speaker 1

I'm all for bottling up your feelings, but there's a there's a limit where you just becoming super annoying and passive.

00;20;09;03 - 00;20;12;03

Speaker 3

Aggressive. So. All right.

00;20;12;03 - 00;20;22;11

Speaker 1

So then we're at the Rangers office and they're in there. And then Dean's like, check out the size of this freaking bear. And that's a goodbye. It won't be anywhere. There's a bear that big.

00;20;22;14 - 00;20;23;16

Speaker 3

No pass.

00;20;23;18 - 00;20;29;07

Speaker 2

Not going I can't bear I don't want to hang out there. I mean, bears can be cute and all, but not.

00;20;29;09 - 00;20;31;25

Speaker 1

Oh, I mean, yes, bears can be cute.

00;20;31;25 - 00;20;32;27

Speaker 3

But from.

00;20;32;27 - 00;20;33;00

Speaker 1

A.

00;20;33;00 - 00;20;33;19

Speaker 3

Distance.

00;20;33;23 - 00;20;35;09

Speaker 2

Not when they're eating your face.

00;20;35;12 - 00;20;49;10

Speaker 1

And not when they're eating your face. So they lied to Ranger Dick about. I don't even know his name. I just want to say, they lie about being environmental study majors, which at first is actually that's actually believable thing. Like, I could look at you and be like.

00;20;49;13 - 00;20;50;00

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;20;50;03 - 00;20;54;22

Speaker 2

You want to be an environmentalist? Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah. That's like the first cover that actually. I was like, all.

00;20;54;22 - 00;20;57;29

Speaker 3

Right, all right. That I've heard. Yep.

00;20;58;01 - 00;21;09;26

Speaker 1

So, you know, they get the backstory about Haley and really don't have a lot to talk about in the scene. And basically Dean's like, hey, we're going to go talk to Haley. And then Sam's like, oh, I want to.

00;21;09;28 - 00;21;10;17

Speaker 3

Win.

00;21;10;17 - 00;21;16;23

Speaker 1

With. And but he's not driving. So he basically has to go where the car takes him, so haha.

00;21;16;23 - 00;21;18;09

Speaker 3

Sam.

00;21;18;12 - 00;21;22;23

Speaker 1

So they get to Haley's door and now they're park rangers. I mean.

00;21;22;26 - 00;21;24;09

Speaker 2

Cause believable.

00;21;24;12 - 00;21;32;19

Speaker 1

Yeah. And then Haley asks for ID, like who has ID for park Ranger, so like. And that's not something I'd be like, can you show me your park ranger ID?

00;21;32;22 - 00;21;40;17

Speaker 2

And but if some dudes that look like some, like, frat bros showed up at my door and we're like, we're park rangers, I'd be like, yeah, sure.

00;21;40;21 - 00;21;42;00

Speaker 3

Why?

00;21;42;02 - 00;21;49;29

Speaker 1

Well, I mean, if I had a brother that was missing in the woods, and then people came to my door and said they were park rangers, I'd probably be like, this makes sense to me.

00;21;50;06 - 00;21;56;00

Speaker 2

And thank you for coming to help me. Yeah. At least somebody is. Yeah, that's their territory.

00;21;56;02 - 00;22;10;13

Speaker 1

So she takes a shitty Ranger fake ID, and they're just. And she's like, fine, I guess this is who you are. And then Dean curves out again because he's a pretty girl. I mean, she's real cute, but still, like, God damn it, Dean, put it in your pants.

00;22;10;16 - 00;22;13;17

Speaker 3

00;22;13;19 - 00;22;33;00

Speaker 1

So then I sit down, you know, and they start again. I really have a ton to say about the scene. So they're sitting down. They're questioning Haley. They're watching the videos that were sent over the sat phone. Then Sam gets just kind of like someone farted. Look, while he's on there, like, oh, I saw something. And that says, you know, I recognized something on here.

00;22;33;00 - 00;22;35;17

Speaker 3

So what's.

00;22;35;20 - 00;22;38;02

Speaker 1

Anything to say about this before we get to the bar?

00;22;38;04 - 00;22;41;22

Speaker 2

No, I was just already laughing about, like, how Dean was already like, she's on her.

00;22;41;22 - 00;22;42;20

Speaker 3

I was like, oh, my God.

00;22;42;24 - 00;22;47;28

Speaker 2

Of course he is. And it was also like, kind of obvious, like, oh, of course he's going to have the hots for this chick.

00;22;48;00 - 00;22;53;18

Speaker 1

Yeah, well, of course, like every girl that's in this is I mean, it's Hollywood, but of course they're always super hot.

00;22;53;20 - 00;22;55;22

Speaker 2

Well, duh. I mean, she's horrible.

00;22;55;24 - 00;22;57;01

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;22;57;04 - 00;23;23;09

Speaker 1

So okay, so now we segue in there at the bar, and Sam has determined that a bunch of folks have gone missing in the woods. He is researching like, the wind, and he even has photocopies of things from the library to it. He's on. Yeah, I mean, he must have gotten some microfilm done super, super fast. Yeah. And he realizes that every 23 years someone goes missing and Sam's like, did you see that in the video?

00;23;23;15 - 00;23;26;19

Speaker 1

Something ran behind Tommy's tent, and then. Oh, my.

00;23;26;19 - 00;23;28;08

Speaker 3

God, there's a survivor.

00;23;28;14 - 00;23;34;20

Speaker 1

We have to go talk to the survivor. So then they go to the cabin. Anything but by the bar.

00;23;34;20 - 00;23;35;17

Speaker 3

Before we go on.

00;23;35;19 - 00;23;39;03

Speaker 2

No, no, I've got I've got a comment on the cabin, though.

00;23;39;05 - 00;23;39;21

Speaker 3

Okay.

00;23;39;23 - 00;23;49;01

Speaker 1

So we go to the cabin and we meet Mr. Sean. Dean's giving him some sexy eyes, and I was like, okay, so maybe Dean's also really impressed with Mr. Shaw.

00;23;49;04 - 00;24;00;15

Speaker 2

Maybe because he couldn't frickin see because that place was so damn dark, like, why is this guy had no lights? That was my concern. I'm like, okay, well, I could smell the room. And because he smoking in his place and as a smoker, I'm like the indoor smoking thing.

00;24;00;18 - 00;24;02;06

Speaker 3

I know. Yeah, it's the whole thing.

00;24;02;09 - 00;24;18;21

Speaker 2

But I'm like, why is his cabin so dark? Why does he not have a light on anywhere? It doesn't even seem like at this point it would be that late at night. Yeah, maybe I it would be weird to hop over to this guy's place, be like, oh, we're going to talk about the time you're like, lied about an attack as a child after dark.

00;24;18;22 - 00;24;25;14

Speaker 2

That just seems like an appropriate time to come to your place when you have no lights. I don't know, it was it that bothered?

00;24;25;16 - 00;24;31;10

Speaker 1

Some of us just like to live in the dark, Diana. And there's a place for some of us.

00;24;31;13 - 00;24;32;21

Speaker 3

All right, so.

00;24;32;21 - 00;24;36;23

Speaker 1

You know, they start talking in Mr. Shaw, and they're like, man, we believe you.

00;24;37;00 - 00;24;37;29

Speaker 3

Yeah. He's like, what?

00;24;38;04 - 00;24;39;26

Speaker 1

Oh my God, someone please me.

00;24;39;29 - 00;24;42;03

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;24;42;05 - 00;24;50;03

Speaker 1

And then he starts telling the stories like, oh my God, move too fast to see. It got inside our cabin, but it was locked. Diana. The cabin.

00;24;50;03 - 00;24;53;03

Speaker 3

Was spot, I blocked it. There's, you know, a.

00;24;53;03 - 00;25;07;12

Speaker 1

Bear that could do something like that. And I'm like, whoa, a bear that kind of like a tour. And I'm pretty sure I could go into YouTube and find a bear unlocking a door. I bet that somewhere out there we can find some. Somebody has video of that to send that to me, because I would like to see a bear locking the door.

00;25;07;13 - 00;25;07;29

Speaker 1

That's. It's pretty.

00;25;07;29 - 00;25;09;26

Speaker 3

Impressive.

00;25;09;28 - 00;25;17;13

Speaker 1

So we find out that this creature killed Mr. Shaw's parents. But he was. He survived, but he got a really cool scar. I mean.

00;25;17;19 - 00;25;19;12

Speaker 2

It's a pretty. It's a pretty cool. It's a badass.

00;25;19;12 - 00;25;23;07

Speaker 1

Scar. And. And Dean is also like. I like your scar and dance.

00;25;23;07 - 00;25;26;05

Speaker 2

Jealous of that scar? Dean wants that scar.

00;25;26;07 - 00;25;27;05

Speaker 3

He does.

00;25;27;09 - 00;25;30;13

Speaker 2

So he knows this. So I think it's hot.

00;25;30;15 - 00;25;36;11

Speaker 1

Anyway, so they leave Mr. Shores and they start walking to the car and they start talking about things, you know, like.

00;25;36;12 - 00;25;38;00

Speaker 2

It's like nerves in black dogs.

00;25;38;07 - 00;25;39;12

Speaker 3

Yeah, it could be.

00;25;39;12 - 00;25;44;16

Speaker 1

A skinwalker, could be a black dog. But then he opens up. Trunk high. Trunk high. Trunk team.

00;25;44;16 - 00;25;45;23

Speaker 3

Trunk.

00;25;45;25 - 00;26;03;08

Speaker 1

Team trunk for life. So then they start loading him. Duffle bag with weapons. And this seems like a very poor choice for me. Like you're. No, you're going into the woods. Like, how would you. Are you just going to fumble through the duffel bag looking for your gun? You would think at some point they would have, like, at least, spacing on the word.

00;26;03;10 - 00;26;13;12

Speaker 1

What's the word for the the military style backpack? That all the tactical guys have a Molly bag, like you would think they'd have, like a Molly bag or something.

00;26;13;14 - 00;26;23;13

Speaker 2

Yeah. Or maybe something like something to survive with other than weapons. Because the weapons are cool. But if you're going out into the woods, you don't know how long you're going to be there.

00;26;23;16 - 00;26;25;22

Speaker 1

Hey, we do find out later. He brought food.

00;26;25;24 - 00;26;30;06

Speaker 3

And he brought some good choices.

00;26;30;08 - 00;26;34;13

Speaker 2

But yeah. Yeah, they're just, like, piling weapons into a bag, like, haphazardly. It's great.

00;26;34;18 - 00;26;39;17

Speaker 1

Yeah. It is. No, I was like, it seems like an awkward thing to carry. I do not approve of your weapon bag.

00;26;39;18 - 00;26;40;25

Speaker 2

No balance.

00;26;40;27 - 00;27;02;20

Speaker 1

Yeah. All right, so now we're back in the woods again. We meet up with Hayley, and she has a guide who looks oh, so friendly. And she does not Dean for hiking and biker boots and jeans, but, I mean, that is fair. But also, I go into the woods and converse and have it in the woods, in combat boots and many other things.

00;27;02;20 - 00;27;15;17

Speaker 2

So I mean, like honestly, depending on like your comfort level, any kind of boot can be good in the woods. I just I do question your converse a little bit, but you know, if you are a trail, who cares?

00;27;15;19 - 00;27;32;19

Speaker 1

The only problem with converse, at least in South Texas, is that mesquite. Like. If those of you who don't know mesquite are, they're these really an ornery brushes, a brush tree, whatever. And they have really big swarms of them. And I have had those thorns go through the bottom of my shoe a number.

00;27;32;23 - 00;27;33;12

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;27;33;14 - 00;27;42;10

Speaker 2

And I'm just, I guess my like, aging complaints, but I could use a little more support. The converse can give me these days. Like they just don't.

00;27;42;10 - 00;27;45;19

Speaker 1

Well, you know, there's the converse to has arch support.

00;27;45;27 - 00;27;47;09

Speaker 2

That's true, that's true. That's fair.

00;27;47;09 - 00;27;48;09

Speaker 1

Yeah. Those are ones I.

00;27;48;09 - 00;27;52;25

Speaker 3

Wear very cheap. That's converse anyways.

00;27;52;28 - 00;27;53;10

Speaker 1

All right.

00;27;53;12 - 00;28;13;22

Speaker 2

So so they're in the woods with Hailey and what was, guys, Roy or Hunter? Roy. Yeah. And the brother, her little brother and, and of course, Sam and Dean. So they're in the woods looking around. And Roy is not entertained by Sam and Dean at all.

00;28;13;25 - 00;28;32;12

Speaker 1

Nope. Right. Just a dick. Things happen. A dick's Roy Kirby nicer. All right, so then we're going to pan and we see Tommy's alive and he's hanging in the cave, and he sees somebody hanging next to him. I think it's scary. It looks like Gary, but he's real dirty, so it's kind of hard to tell if it's Gary or not.

00;28;32;14 - 00;28;41;24

Speaker 1

Then we see the shadow. Something that is tall, skinny and furry, and it comes up and it starts, you know, eating Gary while Tommy just chews on his lip. Yes, he's afraid.

00;28;41;26 - 00;28;46;08

Speaker 2

And it's obviously not a bear at this point. I'm just going to point that out because bears are.

00;28;46;10 - 00;28;46;24

Speaker 3

Typically.

00;28;46;24 - 00;28;47;08

Speaker 1

Not a bear.

00;28;47;08 - 00;28;52;11

Speaker 2

Tying people up. Yeah. No, we've we are now clear that this is not a bear because bear.

00;28;52;11 - 00;28;53;19

Speaker 1

Savaged this.

00;28;53;21 - 00;28;54;24

Speaker 3

Bear with.

00;28;54;24 - 00;28;59;10

Speaker 2

Stablish at this point. This is the point where it's clear not a bear, just in case anybody was wondering.

00;28;59;12 - 00;29;00;27

Speaker 3

Oh. All right.

00;29;00;29 - 00;29;13;16

Speaker 1

So there we go back to them walking through the woods. And Dean is being bit of an asshole and karma pacing back instantly when he almost steps on a bear track, a trap. And then and then Hayley points out that the duffel bag is gone.

00;29;13;19 - 00;29;16;28

Speaker 3

It was basically. Oh.

00;29;17;01 - 00;29;35;17

Speaker 1

And the Dean's bag is the most honest I've ever been with a wolf. Which is not saying I want. And I'm like, what kind of line do you think that's going to work on a girl? But sure. So, you know, it becomes too quiet. Dean's like, you know, Roy, you shouldn't go off by yourself. And then Roy is like, I'm an uppity dick.

00;29;35;17 - 00;29;38;08

Speaker 1

And then we all know you're going to get it, Roy, because.

00;29;38;10 - 00;29;40;17

Speaker 3

That's what's going to happen to you. Because.

00;29;40;19 - 00;30;00;27

Speaker 1

And I stumble onto the campsite and it's all shredded and bloody. So they're also like, okay, guess not. It could still be a bear, I don't know. But then Dean figures out that the bodies were dragged from the campsite and then just disappear. And he is like, well, I guess this isn't a skinwalker or a black dog or this.

00;30;01;03 - 00;30;24;05

Speaker 1

Yeah. At this time, I had to stop and go look up what a black dog was beyond, you know, what if Diana's dogs, she's a very cute black dog. So. And this is just Wikipedia. I didn't dive too deeply into this one. So a black dog is a motif of a spectral or demonic entity found primarily in the folklore of the British Isles.

00;30;24;07 - 00;30;35;09

Speaker 1

The black dog is essentially a nocturnal apparition, in some cases a shapeshifter, and is often said to be associated with the devil or described as a ghost or a supernatural hellhound.

00;30;35;11 - 00;30;37;22

Speaker 3

So,

00;30;37;24 - 00;30;47;27

Speaker 2

That's what I, when I kept hearing Black Dog, I won't lie, I my brain was going to, pat foot. So if you want your Harry Potter drop in.

00;30;47;29 - 00;30;50;08

Speaker 3

There you go. Well, I.

00;30;50;08 - 00;30;52;12

Speaker 1

Mean, Patrick wasn't evil.

00;30;52;15 - 00;30;56;23

Speaker 2

No, he wasn't, but then, like, you know, the tea leaves and everything else, like. Yeah. No. So there we go. That's.

00;30;56;28 - 00;31;00;26

Speaker 3

Well, that's the grim, I know, but, there's a black dog and the Saint.

00;31;01;02 - 00;31;02;19

Speaker 1

But the grim wasn't paid for.

00;31;02;19 - 00;31;08;28

Speaker 2

It. No, it wasn't, but I'm just saying that that was my supernatural like brain was going there. That's how I would. That's all other supernatural brain.

00;31;09;00 - 00;31;09;28

Speaker 3

Okay?

00;31;10;00 - 00;31;15;24

Speaker 2

Not TV show supernatural. Just general fantasy. Brain was going there. I'm like, Black dog.

00;31;15;24 - 00;31;18;03

Speaker 3

Is that about. Yeah.

00;31;18;06 - 00;31;30;22

Speaker 1

So anyway, so back to the camp. So Hayley finds a phone and it's all bloody, they hear screaming in the distance. Roy runs away and he runs with his gun and like.

00;31;30;22 - 00;31;34;06

Speaker 2

They drop all of their gear and run for the record.

00;31;34;11 - 00;31;37;09

Speaker 1

So you can't run with a duffel bag.

00;31;37;11 - 00;31;40;20

Speaker 3

Well, you can, it's just challenging.

00;31;40;23 - 00;31;49;07

Speaker 1

Yeah. And so Roy is running with the rifle. DNA is running with a gun, and he's just. They're all just waving them around willy nilly. It looks very, very bad.

00;31;49;10 - 00;31;49;18

Speaker 2

Gun.

00;31;49;18 - 00;31;55;12

Speaker 1

Safety, gun safety. Oh, never run with guns like that. Sam also doesn't have a gun.

00;31;55;14 - 00;31;56;06

Speaker 3

00;31;56;08 - 00;32;02;22

Speaker 1

Yeah. So this is running through the wall. The. And then eventually they go back to the camp and all the gear is gone because you left it there?

00;32;02;24 - 00;32;04;21

Speaker 3

Yes.

00;32;04;24 - 00;32;13;22

Speaker 1

So either bitching at each other and eventually Sam pulls Dean off to the side. He opens up David's journal, and he says he thinks it's a Wendigo. I think he.

00;32;13;22 - 00;32;16;19

Speaker 3

Says Wendigo, but.

00;32;16;22 - 00;32;34;03

Speaker 1

And but Dean objects because he's like, well, you know, Wendigo is our in Minnesota woods or. Yeah, I mean, there aren't here they're normally in Minnesota woods or northern Michigan. I've never heard of them this far west. Yeah. And they start giving you a little bit of stuff about it, but not a ton.

00;32;34;05 - 00;32;57;27

Speaker 2

And as soon as they say this word and obviously it's hot earlier than the episode two, but, I want to pronounce it like Buddy the Elf pronounces Francisco, and I'd like to share that. So it's Wendigo. Wendigo. And like, all this fun word to say, Wendigo, which is not probably the accent. The proper place. Don't care. I enjoyed saying it that way, and that's what plays in my head every time I read it or say it.

00;32;57;29 - 00;33;00;14

Speaker 3

Wendigo. All right.

00;33;00;14 - 00;33;01;28

Speaker 1

So Tana has her.

00;33;01;28 - 00;33;04;12

Speaker 3

Wendigo.

00;33;04;14 - 00;33;21;05

Speaker 1

And we determine that, you know, guns are going to be useless against them. So, like, what else did you put in the duffel bag, man? Well, And Sam's smart. He's like, hey, we got to get out of here. And then, of course, there's another pissing contest between right and the boys. Just shove them out already.

00;33;21;08 - 00;33;34;29

Speaker 1

And then Haley is like, hey, my brother's still out here, and I would like to stay and look for them. And they're like, well, yeah. Also, apparently they walked really far and I was like, it's gonna take us a while to get back to the car. We might as well stay here.

00;33;35;01 - 00;33;36;05

Speaker 3

00;33;36;07 - 00;33;45;14

Speaker 1

And Dean's like, you know, but you, we've got to be prepared because, you know, the thing's a good hunter during the day, but an unbelievable hunter at night. And so we need to protect ourselves.

00;33;45;19 - 00;33;48;13

Speaker 3

How so?

00;33;48;15 - 00;33;55;07

Speaker 1

Dean starts putting down some Anasazi symbols that he says a Wendigo will cross over, and I will talk later. Boy, that.

00;33;55;07 - 00;33;56;11

Speaker 3

Is an.

00;33;56;11 - 00;34;14;21

Speaker 1

Issue. But let's. Fine. But then Roy's being a dick again, so you're going to get it right? And then Dean asks him why he's being such a little bitch. Thank you. Dean. And Sam decides that he can't understand why they were there. And, you know, clearly, no dad's ever been here. So why are we here?

00;34;14;21 - 00;34;38;19

Speaker 1

And then, you know, Dean brings out the journal, and really, it's like ten, ten, ten and gives us, you know, one of the main point of the show is, you know, I think he wants to pick up where he left off, saving people, hunting things, the family business. So my craft for this week was I made a giant painting of that sign along with baby.

00;34;38;21 - 00;34;49;14

Speaker 1

So that will be on the Instagram for all of you all to see. Please share your supernatural crafts with us. We'd love to see them when they come up with a hashtag for that. Supernatural crafty hashtag.

00;34;49;15 - 00;34;50;27

Speaker 3

It's really long now.

00;34;50;28 - 00;34;55;18

Speaker 1

We'll see. We'll figure it out. And you can think of a good hashtag, something that's punny or so.

00;34;55;21 - 00;34;56;15

Speaker 3

00;34;56;18 - 00;35;04;15

Speaker 1

But then, you know, Sam's also like, he was like, well, that doesn't really make any sense. Why doesn't he call us and tell us where he is? And, you know, that's true. Really bad.

00;35;04;15 - 00;35;06;05

Speaker 3

Leave a fucking voicemail.

00;35;06;08 - 00;35;07;01

Speaker 1

Like, why are you.

00;35;07;01 - 00;35;09;07

Speaker 3

Leaving weird books? I mean.

00;35;09;07 - 00;35;13;19

Speaker 1

Like, send an email, like anything. Like, why are you being so cryptic, dad.

00;35;13;21 - 00;35;17;00

Speaker 2

By a stamp, I mean, you can mail a damn letter. Who cares? I don't know. Well, I.

00;35;17;00 - 00;35;18;10

Speaker 1

Don't know where they would mail it to.

00;35;18;17 - 00;35;28;08

Speaker 2

Yeah, that's that's challenging, but still, like something there's even at the you know, we don't we're at quite at this technological time that we're at now because of the timeline here. But like.

00;35;28;10 - 00;35;28;17

Speaker 3

Well.

00;35;28;17 - 00;35;31;22

Speaker 1

Clearly you could buy a smartphone that could send video.

00;35;31;25 - 00;35;54;04

Speaker 2

I mean, you got snap videos at phones. I mean, you can figure out a way to send a damn message, somewhat like right here, here I fucking am. I don't know, I don't know, it's weird, but yeah, I yeah, I don't dig the Nazi thing stuck out to me. And then so they're arguing and then like, as much as Roy's kind of a dick kind of just like come in here and just kind of go along with them.

00;35;54;04 - 00;35;59;19

Speaker 2

By the way, I thought that was interesting. I'm like, he's like, shitty about it, but he's still kind of like, yeah, whatever.

00;35;59;22 - 00;36;03;19

Speaker 1

Yeah. But, yeah. And something else, you know.

00;36;03;21 - 00;36;05;13

Speaker 2

It's down for whatever for her. What helps her brothers.

00;36;05;19 - 00;36;08;14

Speaker 1

Haley doesn't make really any choices on her own. Barely.

00;36;08;16 - 00;36;12;02

Speaker 2

Yeah, I know she's like, well, you're looking for my brother. I'm good. That's it.

00;36;12;04 - 00;36;12;13

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;36;12;20 - 00;36;31;24

Speaker 1

And so enduring like this bro moment. You know, Dean basically says like, he's going to be a daddy's boy and he's going to do what dad wants them to do. But he makes a really good point that I think that, you know, helping other people make you feel better, makes you feel better about your own crap. But also, so does killing as many evil sciences bitches as I possibly can.

00;36;31;27 - 00;36;43;20

Speaker 1

So yes, I mean these things. Helping other people makes you feel better about yourself and makes your stuff seem less less painful. And then also sometimes just smacking things around also makes you feel better.

00;36;43;20 - 00;36;48;28

Speaker 3

That's why they're rage rooms now, which is kind of, you know, all right.

00;36;49;01 - 00;36;53;09

Speaker 1

So they here a help me in the woods. I don't think it's quite that.

00;36;53;11 - 00;36;57;02

Speaker 2

It was I mean it was much deeper I just.

00;36;57;04 - 00;36;57;09

Speaker 3

I.

00;36;57;09 - 00;36;58;02

Speaker 1

Really it's just like.

00;36;58;09 - 00;37;02;21

Speaker 3

How you're my only hope.

00;37;02;24 - 00;37;09;04

Speaker 1

So Dean is trying to keep everybody calm, but, of course, Roy's a dick, so he's going to get it.

00;37;09;06 - 00;37;16;08

Speaker 2

And let's point out that they were saying that, like, oh, guns are gonna be useless. It's going to make it more angry. And then what is Roy have.

00;37;16;10 - 00;37;37;08

Speaker 1

Is a gun and he it goes off running with the gun again. And then you know obviously you're going to get it Roy. And then he dies when something hanging upside down from the tree picks him up by his head, I'm like, oh. And there had to be a really interesting stunt double to I guess I could have it around his waist, but getting picked up by your head seems real painful.

00;37;37;10 - 00;37;40;00

Speaker 3

Yeah. I don't know.

00;37;40;02 - 00;37;43;28

Speaker 2

I can't say that I've experienced that, so not.

00;37;44;00 - 00;37;48;17

Speaker 1

Let's not try that later. All right. So Roy is gone.

00;37;48;19 - 00;37;58;24

Speaker 2

We will not be doing stunts. For the record, all right, moving on. So Roy's gone because he shot at it after they made a big deal about shooting. It was going to piss this thing off. And then.

00;37;58;27 - 00;38;00;22

Speaker 3

The Wendigo.

00;38;00;29 - 00;38;15;26

Speaker 2

Was gonna get pissed if you shot at it, so they freaking go and shoot it, and nobody tells Roy, hey, stop freaking shooting at this day because you're going to piss it off more and make things worse. But Roy is just like, you know, guns blazing, you know, out in the woods. So there we go. And then Roy's dead.

00;38;15;29 - 00;38;23;06

Speaker 2

All right, so here we go. Now we're going to talk. I think they talk more about the legend, right? I mean, that's right.

00;38;23;06 - 00;38;42;06

Speaker 1

Yeah. So they come back to the camp and morning has risen. So I guess they, they're this has been going on all night or they're sitting there. Sam has found himself a real nice sitting tree, and he's leaning up against it, and he stroke in the journal. And, you know, I guess he's come to this decision that, you know, he's turned a corner.

00;38;42;11 - 00;39;03;21

Speaker 1

He want he wants to kill the evil son of whatever he calls it. And they start breaking down into the supernatural version of the Wendigo. And according to supernatural, the Wendigo is a Cree Indian word which means evil that devours. Each one was once a man, and they're like, how does a man turn into such a thing?

00;39;03;21 - 00;39;25;22

Speaker 1

Basically, there's a harsh winter. You're starving. And the then eventually that drives you to cannibalism. So the basics, you know, you eat enough people, you become less than human. You're always hungry. And so they're like, well, Tommy could still be alive because, you know, it wants to store food so we can feed whenever it wants.

00;39;25;25 - 00;39;33;17

Speaker 1

It's like, well, how do we stop it? You know, guns are useless. So are knives. So we got a torch. The sucker, which I think torch. This sucker needs to become something.

00;39;33;21 - 00;39;35;14

Speaker 2

Torch the sucker.

00;39;35;16 - 00;39;35;25

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;39;35;26 - 00;39;41;01

Speaker 2

And I like that they were ready to frickin roll with a molotov cocktail. That's pretty bad.

00;39;41;03 - 00;39;46;10

Speaker 1

Yeah, I was into my thoughts about Molotov cocktails for a minute, so I'm gonna pause here.

00;39;46;10 - 00;39;48;25

Speaker 3

And.

00;39;48;27 - 00;39;53;20

Speaker 1

Go to some actual lore. Probably a theme song or something for.

00;39;53;25 - 00;39;54;08

Speaker 3

For the.

00;39;54;08 - 00;39;56;07

Speaker 1

Lore time. Some some spooky stories.

00;39;56;07 - 00;39;57;06

Speaker 2

Story time.

00;39;57;10 - 00;40;08;20

Speaker 1

It's a long time. So obviously in this episode, I want to talk about, you know, the historical legend of the Wendigo. So, Diana.

00;40;08;21 - 00;40;09;26

Speaker 3

Diego.

00;40;09;28 - 00;40;13;27

Speaker 1

Are you ready to be spooky? Turn off your lights?

00;40;13;29 - 00;40;15;24

Speaker 3

No.

00;40;15;26 - 00;40;38;05

Speaker 1

So something's kind of right off the bat. I want to say, there has been some modern interpretations of the Wendigo. These creatures with different lands on their heads. You might have seen that in things like Hannibal. Although the Wendigo legend has said to have inspired the Hannibal Lecter character, but it really is more of a modern thing.

00;40;38;08 - 00;40;59;05

Speaker 1

It's also been a lot of pop culture, like Pet Cemetery. There's even Wendigo and My Little fucking Pony there. That look absolutely nothing like anything else. But yeah. So Wendigo is have become a part of that. Also, a lot of people say, oh, when they hear Wendigo, they're like skinwalkers. And now that's something from the Midwest.

00;40;59;07 - 00;41;22;25

Speaker 1

But that's a different thing. And they did get some of the lore in the episode, right in Fargo alongside, traditional mythology, like, say, and they weren't normally seen in places like Colorado. And we're often a result of cannibalism. Obviously some things are strange, like using the Anasazi symbols for protection, since most of the lore comes in Algonquian tribal mythology.

00;41;22;28 - 00;41;52;22

Speaker 1

These are two different nations of, indigenous people. So belief in the Wendigo is really part of a cultural mythology. And I'm going to try and be as respectful as I can because this is really key to a lot of the Algonquin culture. But also I do suffer from foot and mouth disease. So if I say anything or mispronounce things and not intentionally trying to be offensive, that is just, you know, who I am.

00;41;52;22 - 00;42;17;20

Speaker 1

And I will probably find a lot of people. So anyhow, so that's the general mythos behind this. Oh. Also, I have a shit ton of sources for this, and so I'm not going to cite everything as I go through, but we will post these sources in our show notes so you can go back and you can read up more on the mythology, because it's really fascinating.

00;42;17;23 - 00;42;23;09

Speaker 2

So sources, hashtag sources, getting citations are important.

00;42;23;17 - 00;42;37;05

Speaker 1

Citations are important. I will not be doing them in MLA or Chicago because I already have two graduate degrees, and I have spent enough time doing bibliographies that I do not want to do that anymore.

00;42;37;08 - 00;42;38;12

Speaker 3

Yeah, I had to.

00;42;38;12 - 00;42;41;07

Speaker 2

Create them, I decorated them.

00;42;41;10 - 00;42;42;13

Speaker 3

God.

00;42;42;15 - 00;43;06;08

Speaker 1

So I have tech editors now. All right. So general myth. So according to most Algonquin oral traditions, a wendigo is a cannibalistic monster that preys on the weak and socially disconnected. It can come as a spirit form, possess you, or turn into a giant monster. But in general, there are three types. There's an evil spirit that possesses you.

00;43;06;11 - 00;43;26;10

Speaker 1

There could be a person driven to cannibalism or madness, or it could be a large non-human or former human. Which is the more the monster thing, which is more of what we're seeing in this episode. Like I said, originally, it's with the Algonquin Trois tribes, indigenous to the Great Lakes, eastern seaboard of Canada and the northern US.

00;43;26;12 - 00;43;46;23

Speaker 1

The first written recording for this appears out of the 17th century Jesuit letters. And somewhere, sometimes at this point, they were associated with werewolves. And they really have nothing to do with each other. But I think this was around the same time as the werewolf trials were going on in Europe. So I think they had werewolves in their mind.

00;43;47;00 - 00;43;52;24

Speaker 1

And I like how dieters face perked up when I said werewolf trials, because that was the thing.

00;43;52;26 - 00;43;54;27

Speaker 3

I miss those. Yeah.

00;43;54;29 - 00;43;55;27

Speaker 1

They were occurring around.

00;43;55;27 - 00;43;58;02

Speaker 3

This in my history class. Yeah.

00;43;58;02 - 00;44;21;00

Speaker 1

So the witch trials were also going along with trials and people being werewolves. And the podcast, I think, and this is why We Drink did an episode on it a few weeks ago. So that was also fresh on my mind. But, but part of the problem with figuring out, you know, the, the mythology behind this is because it was largely an oral tradition.

00;44;21;07 - 00;44;41;17

Speaker 1

So there's many different versions of the phenomenon. And so I, I also found a number of references in which has been said to many, just talking about the Wendigo is an invitation for a Wendigo possession. So when many researchers have gone to investigate and record this story, they've asked it for it not to be named. Which is why I.

00;44;41;17 - 00;44;49;12

Speaker 1

Diana, I told you earlier when you thought it was really, you know, saying it like the elf. You may want to stop saying it altogether because you could be inviting possession.

00;44;49;15 - 00;44;54;28

Speaker 3

Thanks, I appreciate that update. Yeah.

00;44;55;00 - 00;45;19;15

Speaker 1

So there are at least more than 37 names for it that just begin with W. So because it's been part of so many different cultures and so many different tribes, and it was passed along through oral tradition, obviously there's a number of different names for it. Wendigo is one of the general or accepted ones. That word has been said to mean the evil spirit that devours mankind.

00;45;19;20 - 00;45;49;09

Speaker 1

And like they said in the show, no matter how much they eat, they will always be hungry. And it's, you know, often connected to winter by way of cold, desolation and selfishness. It's a spirit of destruction and environmental decay. And so when you start thinking about that in terms of a society that spends most of its time in the winter, this is the most time when Wendigo possessions would start coming or the monster would be coming because people are hungry.

00;45;49;11 - 00;45;50;13

Speaker 2

Resources are limited.

00;45;50;16 - 00;46;30;04

Speaker 1

And resources are limited. And a lot of it is is, you know, if you're selfish and basically thinking of yourself by eating another person instead of, you know, doing anything else for it, then yeah. So that's part of the reason why it's associated with, you know, selfishness. So how does one become a Windigo? In most versions of the legend, a human becomes a Wendigo after his or her spirit is corrupted by greed or weakened by extreme conditions such as hunger or cold, and other legends that humans become Wendigo is, when possessed by a prowling spirit during a moment of weakness.

00;46;30;06 - 00;46;44;11

Speaker 1

So depending on the lure, people can turn into them or be possessed by them. Through dreams and dreams is really a large part of. This is also just a large part of indigenous culture altogether. But, as a dream possession. My light, my.

00;46;44;11 - 00;46;49;01

Speaker 2

Gun, I turn the light off because I was listening to your lore and I got scared sexually on.

00;46;49;04 - 00;46;49;16

Speaker 1

00;46;49;18 - 00;46;52;01

Speaker 3

I'm like, oh, no, I'm.

00;46;52;03 - 00;47;07;06

Speaker 1

So, so you can, you know, dreams is one of the ways that they were seen to be possessed. They could you could also be cursed by other people. So there would be the tribes that would defend themselves. Some other tribes sending Wendigo possession to them. So that's.

00;47;07;06 - 00;47;07;27

Speaker 3

Terrifying.

00;47;08;04 - 00;47;26;18

Speaker 1

It is terrifying. But, also, if you're in a state of mental turmoil, you're more likely to open yourself up to becoming to, to becoming possessed. So, a lot of times when you are in a state of depression or other things like that, things that often happen during winter, then you are.

00;47;26;18 - 00;47;29;01

Speaker 2

Open yourself starving and freezing.

00;47;29;03 - 00;47;51;18

Speaker 1

And if you're starving and freezing, so, what do Wendigo is look like? And so this is really thinking more about that third type, you know, the monster side, and obviously between clans, what actually look like shifted. But, you know, generally, you know, the theme of a spirit who possessed people and some of into cannibalism was common.

00;47;51;20 - 00;47;59;06

Speaker 1

They're often depicted as very thin, but also sometimes as giants. So. Wendigo.

00;47;59;09 - 00;48;02;00

Speaker 3

Wendigo. I can't help it.

00;48;02;00 - 00;48;05;21

Speaker 2

I don't know why that got in my head. It's the time of year. I'm sorry.

00;48;05;24 - 00;48;06;17

Speaker 3

There we go.

00;48;06;19 - 00;48;28;17

Speaker 1

As a as a time of year, both for Wendigo and for elf. And so and so, they're always generally really fun. But sometimes there are giants, generally around 14ft tall. But I read ones that they could grow out to be, like 30ft tall. Sometimes are depicted as having glowing eyes, long yellow fangs, and long tongs.

00;48;28;20 - 00;48;59;29

Speaker 1

Sometimes they have yellowish skin, or sometimes they're really pale, sometimes or matted with hair, and sometimes their skin is decaying. A few sources often said they've chewed off their own lips because they were so hungry, they started devouring their own flesh because a hunger couldn't be stopped. But also, one of the main things is many of them say that the creatures are made of ice, or the very least, they have a heart of ice, so that goes into, ways in which we can kill a Wendigo, which I'll get into it a bit.

00;49;00;03 - 00;49;23;01

Speaker 1

So sometimes people say they had voices, and the voices can paralyze use to just hearing this could send you into basically being terrified and frozen with horror. But traditionally they don't talk. So the mimicry that we saw in this episode is not something that is often associated with the legend, merely it's kind of more like a wailing thing.

00;49;23;04 - 00;49;44;14

Speaker 1

So kind of almost like a banshee cry. And so that's sometimes why they're also like portions of death. There are some stories where, you would hear a shaking kettle, and that would be, premonition that the Wendigo was coming. So shaking kettle, I'm assuming being like a pot that it was going to cook you in?

00;49;44;17 - 00;49;45;09

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;49;45;12 - 00;49;57;22

Speaker 1

So. And the Wendigo is usually, but not always endowed with powers. Things like superhuman strength and stamina that allows it to stalk, overpower, and devour its victims.

00;49;57;24 - 00;49;58;14

Speaker 3

They are.

00;49;58;16 - 00;50;09;16

Speaker 2

These obviously had speed. I mean, like, the speed was bonkers like that. That thing move fucking fast. That was the big thing for this creature specifically on this, for this show. Not just the legend, but that makes sense.

00;50;09;16 - 00;50;10;13

Speaker 3

Yeah. Yep.

00;50;10;17 - 00;50;13;14

Speaker 2

30ft tall is absurd. That's not realistic.

00;50;13;14 - 00;50;15;18

Speaker 3

That was scary. Well, I am, I am like, that's.

00;50;15;18 - 00;50;19;11

Speaker 2

Not realistic, but 30ft tall. That's where I draw the line of real.

00;50;19;11 - 00;50;21;18

Speaker 1

I can't believe a monster is 30ft tall.

00;50;21;18 - 00;50;26;14

Speaker 2

But but I mean, like, if I'm like, oh damn. I'm also like, damn, that'd be real tall for this.

00;50;26;16 - 00;50;43;05

Speaker 1

You know? That would be their age. That's like six of me. So they're usually also credited with having exceptional eyesight, hearing and a sense of smell, and they are said to have the ability to walk across deep snow or even open water without sinking.

00;50;43;08 - 00;50;46;04

Speaker 2

So they can, like, walk on water or in.

00;50;46;06 - 00;50;50;24

Speaker 1

Walk or walk on water to walk across it.

00;50;50;26 - 00;50;53;26

Speaker 3

Yeah. That's some yeah shit. All right.

00;50;53;28 - 00;50;56;25

Speaker 1

That's probably the opposite of Jesus. But okay, I.

00;50;57;02 - 00;51;02;03

Speaker 2

Understand that walking on water part, but not that one. Not everything else about this creature.

00;51;02;05 - 00;51;02;27

Speaker 3

Okay, there we go.

00;51;03;02 - 00;51;28;26

Speaker 1

Yeah. So, how do you cure someone who has been possessed by a Wendigo? Honestly, the most often thing was death. And that was usually followed by a ritual burning and burial. In some legend, Wendigo is can be killed with a conventional weapon, like a club or a firearm. Other legends claim that the Wendigo has to be somehow subdued, and then you have to cut out its heart because it's hearts made of ice.

00;51;28;28 - 00;51;31;09

Speaker 3

And that a lot of spear.

00;51;31;11 - 00;51;34;27

Speaker 1

Well, it's how it. Well, so the problem is.

00;51;34;29 - 00;51;36;01

Speaker 3

Like what they call.

00;51;36;01 - 00;51;37;17

Speaker 2

Possessed by a wendigo.

00;51;37;19 - 00;51;38;20

Speaker 3

Wendigo.

00;51;38;27 - 00;51;47;10

Speaker 2

And and your cure is to burn me and or cut out of my heart. I'm not going to call it a cure. I mean, you defeated the evil. Yeah. Or whatever.

00;51;47;14 - 00;51;48;05

Speaker 3

Well.

00;51;48;07 - 00;51;50;28

Speaker 1

The problem is, is that it's basically.

00;51;50;28 - 00;51;51;21

Speaker 2

Buried in a creep.

00;51;51;23 - 00;51;55;26

Speaker 1

It's a contagious possession. So once one.

00;51;55;26 - 00;51;56;12

Speaker 2

Target.

00;51;56;16 - 00;52;03;04

Speaker 1

Someone is within your tribe has been possessed by that, then it can likely spread to another, so.

00;52;03;04 - 00;52;09;16

Speaker 2

I'm just like, I'm like, that's just a questionable, different definition of cure. But you have to stop the spread, obviously that.

00;52;09;16 - 00;52;11;02

Speaker 3

Yeah, yeah. Got it.

00;52;11;04 - 00;52;39;04

Speaker 1

And some other legends do say that a spiritual leader, like a shaman could dispatch it with a spell in a ceremony. Okay. And there's lots of different stories about that. So, in sightings of this, these have been seen for, like, past 500 years, all over, especially, like, around Canada and the upper Midwest, the Great Lakes area, and I'm going to talk about the two most famous cases that are associated with Windigo.

00;52;39;06 - 00;53;03;18

Speaker 1

innesota town of Russo in the:

00;53;03;21 - 00;53;23;02

Speaker 1

did read that there was at in:

00;53;23;04 - 00;53;24;13

Speaker 2

And bummer, man.

00;53;24;16 - 00;53;24;26

Speaker 3

It is.

00;53;24;26 - 00;53;31;01

Speaker 1

A bummer. But I also think that, you know, it's it's holiday appropriate for when we're recording.

00;53;31;01 - 00;53;46;11

Speaker 2

No, I like it I like it. Yeah. For the for the record as, if you're listening two days ago weren't so this is the Saturday after Thanksgiving that we're recording this. So, yeah, we did that. And, that's why I was talking about Christmas. Yeah.

00;53;46;14 - 00;54;01;23

Speaker 1

And also, shit's about to get real dark. And depressing. Not in a scary way, as it was going to get real dark. So I wanted to give us a bit of humor, and think about some of, you know, people writing over Christmas turkey.

00;54;01;25 - 00;54;03;17

Speaker 2

And the cranberries.

00;54;03;19 - 00;54;06;04

Speaker 1

In the crate, and someone, some dicks stole the cranberry.

00;54;06;04 - 00;54;06;16

Speaker 3

Sauce.

00;54;06;22 - 00;54;08;06

Speaker 2

So that's that's a dick.

00;54;08;06 - 00;54;27;13

Speaker 1

Move it is a dick move. Okay. And also, just because I didn't find it in the newspapers didn't mean it didn't happen. I didn't see anyone books when they kind of went to a little more in depth on it, but basically they I think they also just it was a bad time and they were associating a lot of deaths with an associate with the Wendigo.

00;54;27;16 - 00;54;31;02

Speaker 3

So, okay, so.

00;54;31;05 - 00;54;58;10

Speaker 1

We're going to talk about two of the most famous things that are associated with the Wendigo. And it historically. And the first one is swift Runner. So I am not going to pronounce his name correctly. He was his name was Cock Hooten. So I apologize if I butchered that because I probably did. So Swift runner was a Cree from, what is now central Alberta.

00;54;58;13 - 00;55;16;15

Speaker 1

He was once known as being an upstanding man, but eventually he was kicked out of the community for causing trouble. The Edmonton Journal says this is because he started drinking whiskey. He was trading. And they also I read somewhere that he was drinking whiskey that had plugs of tobacco in it, which seems real gross, but apparently it was a drink.

00;55;16;17 - 00;55;16;24

Speaker 3

It's a.

00;55;16;24 - 00;55;21;02

Speaker 2

Fiction. You can get your booze and your nicotine all at the same time. Liz.

00;55;21;04 - 00;55;46;24

Speaker 1

his six children. And then in:

00;55;46;29 - 00;56;07;07

Speaker 1

But he came back as alone. And his in-laws were basically like, what's, you know, where is everybody? And he really didn't give them a good answer. And they inform the mounted police. So the mounted police had only been in this area for about five years at this point. So the Mounties go looking for the camp and they couldn't find it.

00;56;07;09 - 00;56;25;07

Speaker 1

And eventually Swift Runner himself went to the mountains in the spring. And, you know, they asked him what was going on. And first he said, you know, his wife killed herself, and the children had all died from starvation. But they looked at him. They're like, well, you're pretty well fat, like he was, you know, over 200 pounds. I think it was six three.

00;56;25;07 - 00;56;47;06

Speaker 1

It was a very large man. And they're like, well, we're not really believing this. So basically they took him up to his camp, which is north of Fort Saskatchewan, and that's where they found the remains of his family. So when Swift Frontier told his story, he said he was first haunted by dreams that a Wendigo spirit came to him and told him to consume those around him.

00;56;47;06 - 00;57;12;04

Speaker 1

And slowly, the spirits took over. And his confession was published in the Saskatchewan Herald. He confessed to a Reverend Father Ledoux, who was a French Catholic missionary. And according to his confession, in the middle of starvation, his mother and brother left in search of food. Swift runner soon sent his wife and children to follow them, with the exception of his ten year old boy.

00;57;12;06 - 00;57;32;25

Speaker 1

And I'm going to go light in a lot of these details because they get really, really disturbing. So basically pushed by an evil spirit, Swift Runner killed his son, this ten year old boy, and he ate him down to sucking the marrow of his bones. He left the house. He went wandering through the woods where he came upon his wife and children.

00;57;32;27 - 00;57;54;20

Speaker 1

They said they never found his mother and brother. He told them that the son had died of starvation, but they didn't seem to really believe him. Then, after three days of rejoining him, the eldest son died. They buried him. And then, just to see how bad off they were, you know, we were then reduced to boil some pieces of our leather tent, our shoes and buffalo robes in order to keep ourselves alive.

00;57;54;22 - 00;58;23;19

Speaker 1

Eventually, though, the spirit came back to Swift Runner, and he did kill his wife and then his three girls. He and his youngest son fed off their remains, so he fed his wife and his three girls to his his seven year old. So when spring arrived, he told us, it's this is a very upsetting story. So when spring arrived, he told his son that they would meet people soon and they would know what he did and make him die, but he assured his son that he wouldn't hurt him.

00;58;23;21 - 00;58;36;16

Speaker 1

And sadly, while they were only a few miles from him, you know, from his relatives or sitting at the campfire, the spirit overtook Swift Runner again, and he killed the last of his children and made him.

00;58;36;18 - 00;58;39;08

Speaker 3

After all that time that some bullshit.

00;58;39;11 - 00;58;47;01

Speaker 2

They kept alive, Tom was I shit. The kid's like, all right, I'm gonna be all right, I guess. I mean, not mentally, obviously. I mean, therapy was probably.

00;58;47;01 - 00;58;49;12

Speaker 1

No, no, it's not going to be all right.

00;58;49;15 - 00;58;51;28

Speaker 2

No, no, that's gonna get you to.

00;58;52;05 - 00;58;53;11

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;58;53;13 - 00;59;07;02

Speaker 1

So. And then according to his confession, you know, he didn't kill his mother or his brother. Well, they were never seen again. And most people are like, well, why would you know at this point, you're already telling us everything you would probably admit to doing this.

00;59;07;04 - 00;59;10;02

Speaker 3

That's fair. Ish. Yeah.

00;59;10;04 - 00;59;11;09

Speaker 1

So.

00;59;11;11 - 00;59;12;04

Speaker 3

00;59;12;06 - 00;59;36;18

Speaker 1

and his trial began in August:

00;59;36;25 - 01;00;00;15

Speaker 1

a.m. in:

01;00;00;18 - 01;00;01;20

Speaker 2

It's fucking cold.

01;00;01;23 - 01;00;22;22

Speaker 1

Yeah. And so they don't really know what they're doing. And there's a whole bunch of there's a crowd out there because, they've never seen a man hanged. People are gross. And so while they're waiting for, they're waiting for the magistrate or somebody to get there, they were basically outside for two hours and for a while, like, let's, let's get this going.

01;00;22;25 - 01;00;29;21

Speaker 1

And then they found out the crowd had taken the trap from the gallows and burned it for war. So they had to rebuild the trap.

01;00;29;23 - 01;00;31;15

Speaker 3

Womp, womp. Yeah.

01;00;31;15 - 01;00;54;08

Speaker 1

The hanged Man, who was an Army pensioner, paid $50, forgot to bind his arms, but eventually, so two hours after it was supposed to start, he was led to the gallows. And just before the trap fell, Swift Runner said, I am no longer a man. And Swift Runner went down with fierce full force, serving a drop of five feet the daily evening, Murphy reported he died without a struggle.

01;00;54;08 - 01;01;16;03

Speaker 1

The body was cut down an hour and an hour and buried in the snow outside the fort. Which is pretty much thought to be a lie because it's really hard to bury in the snow. Nobody, nobody knows where he's buried. What are the people? I'll talk a reference, a book later. Chad Lewis said, you know, they went looking for it and they really couldn't find it, but,

01;01;16;05 - 01;01;29;19

Speaker 1

Yeah. So that took place in Fort Saskatchewan. I happened to Saskatchewan. It's lovely. But I also went there in the summer. So, and I've been to Edmonton, which was, but Saskatchewan is a beautiful place.

01;01;29;22 - 01;01;33;21

Speaker 2

I have not been to Canada. I'll make that clear.

01;01;33;24 - 01;01;34;08

Speaker 3

Canada is.

01;01;34;08 - 01;01;35;04

Speaker 1

Awesome.

01;01;35;06 - 01;01;35;27

Speaker 3

I mean, I'm not.

01;01;35;27 - 01;01;39;27

Speaker 2

I'm not necessarily anti Canada. I just haven't had a reason to go to Canada.

01;01;39;27 - 01;01;40;21

Speaker 3

Yeah.

01;01;40;23 - 01;01;44;17

Speaker 2

But I'm not really a winter person, so that probably feeds into it somewhere.

01;01;44;19 - 01;01;45;21

Speaker 3

Yeah I've been there.

01;01;45;21 - 01;01;51;08

Speaker 1

In my old winter for to various parts but I've never gone like super deep.

01;01;51;10 - 01;01;59;16

Speaker 2

I just, I just, I being the Texan like ignorant asshole that I am, I just assume that their summer is much like our winter in Texas.

01;01;59;24 - 01;02;04;03

Speaker 1

No, the summer's beautiful. I went, fishing on a lake.

01;02;04;03 - 01;02;08;05

Speaker 3

And yeah, I'm not that dumb, I promise. Yeah, I know, I.

01;02;08;05 - 01;02;36;12

Speaker 1

Don't know, but it's also really, it's really interesting to you because there's such a huge time for, road construction to happen because everything is always under winter. So in the summer, like, it's crazy road construction. So I had to drive back from there was north. I forgot what part Saskatchewan was. So basically a six hour drive, and I was going through a lot of the reservation, some others, but there was like going over all these weird dirt roads and things that I'm not sure where my GPS took me.

01;02;36;12 - 01;02;45;00

Speaker 1

I went through some mountains, but by the time I got back to and turn my jeep and like them, you could just see like like there's one little hole outside of the dirt you could see through.

01;02;45;02 - 01;02;45;28

Speaker 3

But.

01;02;46;00 - 01;02;51;18

Speaker 1

Anyhow, okay, so that was a super depressing story of Swift Runner.

01;02;51;20 - 01;02;55;17

Speaker 2

Yeah, thanks. Thanks for that. So hot down with that one because,

01;02;55;21 - 01;02;57;02

Speaker 1

It's going to get it's going to be.

01;02;57;05 - 01;02;59;29

Speaker 2

He ate his family. That's great. Lovely.

01;03;00;04 - 01;03;01;19

Speaker 1

Yeah. So it's going to get worse.

01;03;01;21 - 01;03;02;09

Speaker 3

Yeah.

01;03;02;11 - 01;03;03;18

Speaker 2

It was.

01;03;03;21 - 01;03;11;07

Speaker 1

Well, it's going to get worse just from a cultural perspective. Less from a eating your babies perspective.

01;03;11;09 - 01;03;19;25

Speaker 2

I can tell you that cultural and cultural cultural depression. Got it to handle that baby. Baby is when I get sad, apparently.

01;03;19;27 - 01;03;20;26

Speaker 3

You know.

01;03;20;28 - 01;03;21;20

Speaker 2

Not talking about. So.

01;03;21;21 - 01;03;46;19

Speaker 1

Yeah, yeah, the lights are back on. So this isn't a scary story. It's depressing. Okay, so we're going to talk about Jack Fiedler. So, like we're talking about earlier, most of the clans believe that a person by a wendigo would need to be taken out in order to cure them. And many thought to be possessed would ask for this to happen so they could stop themselves from hurting other people around them.

01;03;46;21 - 01;04;04;00

Speaker 1

And the person most likely to do this would be a shaman, although not always. But this is going to lead us to the story of Jack Fiedler. So Jack Fiedler, who was known to his own people as he who stands in the southern sky, was a shaman and a leader of I'm going to say it's the sucker people.

01;04;04;00 - 01;04;28;18

Speaker 1

utes and until around the mid:

01;04;28;24 - 01;04;58;14

Speaker 1

in the creator. And at about:

01;04;58;16 - 01;05;06;03

Speaker 1

And the leader at the time was porcupine standing sideways. Who was also the great name? It is a great name.

01;05;06;03 - 01;05;07;05

Speaker 3

Yeah.

01;05;07;07 - 01;05;08;26

Speaker 2

My name is Teddy Siris.

01;05;08;27 - 01;05;26;27

Speaker 1

Yeah. I'm talking he's a really, really great leader. And there's some really good stories about him. He's also probably the earliest recorded person of the Sandy Lake nation. And there are five clans at this time. There was the sucker, the pelican, the crane, the sturgeon and the caribou. And so the fiddler said, that's porcupine standing sideways.

01;05;26;27 - 01;05;53;09

Speaker 1

Who was Jack's dad? They were part of the sucker clan. So the trading post opens and the clans are trading furs in exchange for weaponry, clothing and alcohol. And over the next few decades, there was a time of famine, alcoholism, and depleted natural resources and stories of the Windigo, basically because it's a manifestation of evil or misfortune, began to rise and porcupine standing sideways.

01;05;53;09 - 01;06;15;23

Speaker 1

Games, renowned as a leader and a shaman who protects people from the Wendigo. And at this time, this these HBC traders knew about the Windigo phenomenon and witnessed the actions of the Cree that they would take against it, including killing those that thought to be the windows. But the authorities were even alerted to this. By the lieutenant governor of the nearby district and the postmasters.

01;06;15;26 - 01;06;28;00

Speaker 1

But they were looked over either because it was a means and at risk damaging the fur trade, or because the relationship between the Cree and the traders at this time was largely non-confrontational. So we think about historically.

01;06;28;00 - 01;06;28;22

Speaker 3

That's,

01;06;28;25 - 01;06;34;21

Speaker 1

Is an important shift, right? So up until this time, basically everybody was like, we're going to leave you alone. You have your own.

01;06;34;21 - 01;06;36;05

Speaker 2

Log, I'll do your thing. You got your I'll.

01;06;36;05 - 01;06;36;22

Speaker 1

Do your thing.

01;06;36;23 - 01;06;40;16

Speaker 2

You got your stuff going on. You got handled. Whatevs.

01;06;40;18 - 01;06;41;14

Speaker 3

Yeah.

01;06;41;16 - 01;06;48;19

Speaker 1

But eventually, you know, porcupine. Porcupine, standing sideway, died as he died when he was 128.

01;06;48;22 - 01;06;50;24

Speaker 3

Porcupine standing sideways.

01;06;51;00 - 01;06;53;28

Speaker 2

Yeah. If you're not into the whole brevity thing.

01;06;54;00 - 01;06;54;20

Speaker 3

You know.

01;06;54;23 - 01;07;22;18

Speaker 1

So he died when he was 120 years old. And Jack becomes a leader. The sucker clan. I think he was about 61 at this time. And he and his brother Joseph, here's another name, which is peppercorn. I think I said that right. But they become known as the feeders of the Wendigo. Jack has attributed to taking out somewhere between 4 and 20 people that were affected by Windigo.

01;07;22;21 - 01;07;47;02

Speaker 1

le bit more authority. And in:

01;07;47;04 - 01;08;10;12

Speaker 1

She was in a great deal of pain, and it was determined to prevent her transportation transformation. She would need to be killed as several members of the tribes held her hands and legs, Jack and Joseph slipped a slipped a cotton covered cloth which was a string around her neck, and pulled until her death was final. A hole was quickly dug and shoulders were wood, and she was burned to prevent the Wendigo from returning.

01;08;10;14 - 01;08;27;13

Speaker 1

So she's put to death. She's burned to kill, to stop the Windigo from possessing other members of the clan. But the Mounties hear about this, and they come, and they arrest and charge the brothers with murder on June 15th. So, thinking about the time.

01;08;27;16 - 01;08;30;29

Speaker 2

Mounties ain't buying this this possession crap, they're like.

01;08;31;02 - 01;08;32;04

Speaker 1

So.

01;08;32;07 - 01;08;34;05

Speaker 2

Yeah, y'all know your sister.

01;08;34;07 - 01;08;44;06

Speaker 1

Well, really is likely a means for the mounted police. The basis is to attempt to assert dominance and control over the people because, you know, the in the culture.

01;08;44;13 - 01;08;46;19

Speaker 2

So you're saying it's a cultural attack as opposed to.

01;08;46;24 - 01;09;02;20

Speaker 1

Pretty much a cultural attack? Yeah. So the the mountains are there and then people are like, you know, we're not murdering people. This is, you know, we're putting, kicking, taking somebody out of her suffering. Right? The same thing like you would do with the wounded animal. You know, this is how we how we deal with this here.

01;09;02;20 - 01;09;15;12

Speaker 2

And this is similar to euthanasia shit. So that's why go down that. Yeah. Yeah. But anyways. But anyway. So but but the Mounties were like nah, y'all can't do that shit. And the and the tribe was like, this is our internal rules. And that's right.

01;09;15;14 - 01;09;32;03

Speaker 1

So but Jack and Joseph ended up going with the Mounties willingly. And basically they're just like, please, just, you know, don't be too harsh on them. And they they wouldn't have done it if they've known it was wrong. And they could go back and they could teach the clans a new way. But they're just not listened to and they're taken to trial.

01;09;32;11 - 01;09;52;12

Speaker 1

And part of the problem is, is that this trial becomes really sensationalized. And all over Canada, their story like headlines with things like devil worship among the Cree and all the newspapers are putting out some really heinous bullshit, about this being like, you know, this is all about we're worshiping Satan and all this other stuff.

01;09;52;15 - 01;09;56;14

Speaker 2

Which causes some, like, terrible cultural associations.

01;09;56;14 - 01;09;57;18

Speaker 3

Yeah, yeah.

01;09;57;20 - 01;10;02;22

Speaker 1

So obviously, you know, at this point there isn't going to be a fair trial. So.

01;10;02;24 - 01;10;03;14

Speaker 3

And.

01;10;03;17 - 01;10;33;03

Speaker 1

Shockingly, so after 15 weeks of captivity, Jack does escape into the woods and he commits suicide. But Joseph's trial goes on, and at Joseph's trial, he didn't have a lawyer because Canadian Department of Justice told the court they shouldn't provide one. And he was found guilty and sentenced to hang people in the area brought forth a petition, you know, stating that he was committing acts of mercy to prevent a person from becoming a cannibal.

01;10;33;06 - 01;10;57;18

Speaker 1

And this really needs to be taken into account. So there are many people that are petitioning for an overturn of the verdict and at least saying, hey, at least put him in jail, sentence him to death. Right? And during his incarceration at Stony Mountain Penitentiary, he spent most of his time in the hospital because he was very sick and appeals for his release were actually successful, and it was going to be overturned.

01;10;57;18 - 01;11;04;10

Speaker 1

But it came to there was became too late. And he died of, some two, three days before his pardon was.

01;11;04;13 - 01;11;05;08

Speaker 2

Consumption.

01;11;05;08 - 01;11;08;26

Speaker 3

That month. Yeah.

01;11;08;29 - 01;11;29;16

Speaker 1

andy Lake First Nation. So in:

01;11;29;23 - 01;11;50;21

Speaker 1

And the Crown formally recognized the deer like band. The five clans of the Sandy Lake area become the Deer Lake Band, and before that there was a distinction made by the elders between the leader of a clan and achieve, and after the signing of the treaty, the treaty. So before the treaty, each clan had a leader. So basically Robert Fiddler would have been the leader of the second clan.

01;11;50;28 - 01;12;09;15

Speaker 1

And then upon signing of the treaty, Robert Fiddler became chief by election under Indian Act for all five clans. And well, you know, so you can research what the treaty ended up doing for the Sandy Lake, first Sandy Lake, First Nation people. And hear what happened to them after that? They are still around. There's still a thriving.

01;12;09;15 - 01;12;11;04

Speaker 3

Tribe, but. And then, of.

01;12;11;04 - 01;12;32;27

Speaker 1

Course, the other part, you know, really think about this is the thought of imposing a legal system onto a people who are unaware of its workings. And then also to bring this just I want to bring this back to the Windigo. And I'm going to quote directly from Deborah Ross Paleo, who wrote The Power to Punish Conflicts of Authority, because I think it shows how deeply the Windigo is embedded into the culture.

01;12;32;29 - 01;12;49;13

Speaker 1

And then for the sucker clan, the threat of the Windigo is constant, and the defeat of the Wendigo a necessity. The threat of the cannibal is not proclaimed by religious leader, but is understood through common wisdom that is spread throughout the members of any given clan. So.

01;12;49;15 - 01;12;49;18

Speaker 3

I.

01;12;49;18 - 01;12;54;18

Speaker 2

Have two things real fast. Can you spell sucker the sucker clan for that or on that?

01;12;54;18 - 01;12;57;12

Speaker 1

Yeah, s u c k e r.

01;12;57;19 - 01;13;18;02

Speaker 2

But you kind of like sucker. Like we would think. Yeah, we're just making sure because I know it's the. But the question. Right. Yeah. As we say every time you say Sandy Lake, I think of this shitty amusement park in the Dallas Fort Worth area that we went to a band, competition to every year and every school in Dallas Fort Worth metroplex went to a dual band competition there, and it was kind of sketchy.

01;13;18;02 - 01;13;26;15

Speaker 2

I believe it may or may not be open. It was that sketchy. But Sandy, like, I'm like, oh, it's I would say Park. It was real sketchy. My junior high band days.

01;13;26;18 - 01;13;27;28

Speaker 3

There you go.

01;13;28;00 - 01;13;36;00

Speaker 1

Yeah. So, within my within my sources, you can go directly to, the Sandy Lake First Nation site where you can get some of this history. It's.

01;13;36;01 - 01;13;37;28

Speaker 2

I'm the same, Sandy. Like, just to clarify.

01;13;38;04 - 01;13;38;18

Speaker 3

It's the same.

01;13;38;18 - 01;13;45;05

Speaker 2

To me. Like, I'm not in the Dallas Fort Worth, Texas area. This is Canada. Yeah. Yeah, that one's not it.

01;13;45;08 - 01;13;46;14

Speaker 3

Yep.

01;13;46;17 - 01;14;05;07

Speaker 1

I would also strongly recommend, if people want to read more into this, I would recommend reading Wendigo Lore monsters, Myths, and Madness by Chad Lewis and Kevin Lee Nelson. They did a ton of research into into the Wendigo law and some really great stories in there. Also a book which I wanted to get, but I didn't get in time.

01;14;05;10 - 01;14;25;19

Speaker 1

It's called Killing the Shaman, and that really goes into in-depth the story of Jack Fittler, and that was written by James Stephen and Chief Thomas Fittler, who was Jack's grandson. And they put that together through a bunch of oral histories and interviews with the people of the clan. So really goes in adapting to what that trial meant for the that First Nation.

01;14;25;22 - 01;14;30;16

Speaker 1

So that is our our very depressing tales. And yeah, it's awful.

01;14;30;16 - 01;14;38;14

Speaker 2

There's a lot of like family killing and people going to jail and dying and stuff like that. They're eating babies and shit anyways.

01;14;38;14 - 01;14;40;16

Speaker 3

So yeah, but yeah.

01;14;40;19 - 01;14;42;14

Speaker 2

The when the Wendigo.

01;14;42;20 - 01;14;44;24

Speaker 1

The Wendigo, and you keep saying it's going to be.

01;14;44;26 - 01;14;45;21

Speaker 3

You.

01;14;45;23 - 01;14;49;11

Speaker 2

I know, I know, but I think so. I mean.

01;14;49;13 - 01;14;52;25

Speaker 1

I mean, high level, what you take away from that is one, this is something that.

01;14;52;25 - 01;14;53;17

Speaker 3

Was.

01;14;53;19 - 01;14;55;04

Speaker 1

Deeply embedded within our.

01;14;55;04 - 01;15;18;17

Speaker 2

Culture, ingrained in a Native American culture in North America. Absolutely. Yeah. A huge part of it. And, and it's interesting, the crossover from the Aussie and like you were talking about some of the other, tribes associated, you know, that. Well, Okonkwo and maybe more associated. It's really interesting. And then they were talking about Minnesota, which actually makes more sense being close to Canada.

01;15;18;19 - 01;15;49;05

Speaker 2

But this is down in Colorado. So it's a little bit further south for sure. So, so I, I did have a no, because I knew Liz was going to do her book and research because that's Liz and I love her for it, that, what was the accuracy of the legend? And realistically, you know, we could argue the legend is so varied that the what they did on the show could arguably be a very accurate, representation of the legend in a lot of ways, because there's are variations in a 30ft tall monster.

01;15;49;11 - 01;16;10;12

Speaker 2

No, but this guy was big. He was skinny, huge, super freaking fast. So super powers. He is obviously eating people. That parts are given, right? And it gives him some extra crazy powers to continue doing so. So there's, there's some, I think the legitimacy to the legend that they're, that they're depicting, would you agree, Liz.

01;16;10;15 - 01;16;26;23

Speaker 1

Yeah. I mean, they were that far off. I mean, obviously, like you said, there are some weird shit with getting some tribal things wrong, but for the most part, you know, it was what, along with most of the stories and certainly did a lot better job than something like, you know, Hannibal or somebody else would be doing now.

01;16;26;28 - 01;16;38;06

Speaker 2

So which which is impressive on a a show like this, I I'll give him credit for that. I mean that's something. Yeah. But I was just by the way, I was wiping up wine while I was doing that because I did spill my wine while.

01;16;38;06 - 01;16;39;08

Speaker 3

We were just talking.

01;16;39;08 - 01;16;52;00

Speaker 2

Like, you know, like like you do. And my dear husband, who, refilled my wine just a moment ago, also came in and brought my paper towels to wipe up the spilled wine. So.

01;16;52;03 - 01;16;53;08

Speaker 3

Very nice. Go, Dave.

01;16;53;10 - 01;17;10;11

Speaker 2

Go, Dave. Yeah. So, so because my of my questions was the accuracy. Accuracy of the legend because I, I, I mean, being someone that I wasn't, I've talked about and I think we've alluded to in the first episode, both of us are interesting. Like as much as I'm a fucking worse. We're both interested in supernatural lore.

01;17;10;11 - 01;17;31;08

Speaker 2

We, like, enjoy the show. The vampires and I, she, you know, when I get excited about the werewolves and all that stuff. But I. I am intrigued by the supernatural. Laura. We talked about the Wendigo. I wanted to know, like, what? Is this accurate? Or is this just this TV shows choice of how to represent some random fucking word?

01;17;31;11 - 01;17;42;11

Speaker 2

And realistically, it sounds like there's a several iterations of this creature in the show took, their own take on it, but within the lines of what existed out there, which is.

01;17;42;17 - 01;17;43;12

Speaker 3

Yeah, cool for.

01;17;43;12 - 01;17;46;12

Speaker 2

The most part, I'll tell you. Oh, I'm not with that. I'm not. I'm not mad at them.

01;17;46;17 - 01;17;47;28

Speaker 3

Yeah. No I'm not. No.

01;17;48;00 - 01;17;59;25

Speaker 2

So, so at that point then we've got the legend, we've got the background. We now know what we now know what demon Sam, we're up against, their own emotional shut down.

01;17;59;27 - 01;18;00;09

Speaker 3

Other.

01;18;00;09 - 01;18;02;08

Speaker 1

Than their own emotional trauma.

01;18;02;15 - 01;18;02;24

Speaker 3

Yeah.

01;18;02;26 - 01;18;05;25

Speaker 1

All right, so let's jump back to where we were, right?

01;18;05;27 - 01;18;23;01

Speaker 2

Roy's dad. Roy's dead. Haley's upset. She wants to find her brother. Still, obviously, we know that the brother's hanging in a cave, but no one else knows that yet. And she, Sam, Dean, and, Haley and little bro are all out in the woods still. That's pretty much all right. Yeah, right.

01;18;23;08 - 01;18;26;26

Speaker 1

Yeah, they're in the woods. Dean's got his Molotov cocktail in hand.

01;18;26;28 - 01;18;30;20

Speaker 2

Yeah, he's. He's ready. He's ready to riot.

01;18;30;22 - 01;18;31;12

Speaker 3

Yep.

01;18;31;14 - 01;18;47;15

Speaker 1

So they're walking. They see some clawed up trees and they're like, wait a minute. Like this is super easy. These these are really obvious claw marks. And they're like oh no. And then they hear it and then they're running and then rifle. I'm sorry I missed Roy falls out of the tree.

01;18;47;17 - 01;18;49;12

Speaker 3

So yeah, I.

01;18;49;12 - 01;18;56;03

Speaker 1

Splashed on Haley. Sorry, Haley. I'm also terrified of things falling out of trees. Especially water moccasins.

01;18;56;03 - 01;19;11;05

Speaker 2

Me oh, don't say that. My my stepson was telling me about some crazy island where if you go and there's, like, all, there is a gazillion fucking snakes there, and they follow the trees on you. So I don't want to talk about snakes falling out of trees right now. I will have nightmares.

01;19;11;08 - 01;19;16;12

Speaker 3

No Brooks. Anyway, so Roy, I would agree.

01;19;16;18 - 01;19;18;24

Speaker 1

I would much rather have right now.

01;19;18;25 - 01;19;23;01

Speaker 2

Roy could fall on me out of a tree any day. It's just way better than a snake.

01;19;23;08 - 01;19;24;23

Speaker 3

Yeah. All right, so there we go.

01;19;24;25 - 01;19;37;11

Speaker 1

So everybody's running and everybody's falling because they're running through the woods. And I would answer before I probably run to your feet and just be dead, because I would have tripped on a tree stump and then broken my head. And they're screaming and.

01;19;37;12 - 01;19;39;13

Speaker 3

Then, oh.

01;19;39;16 - 01;19;44;11

Speaker 1

We find it, we see it. Sam's like, where's Dean and Haley? Dean truck is not gone off.

01;19;44;13 - 01;19;53;04

Speaker 2

He did. He broke and it broke. I did wonder briefly. I'm like, is that full of booze or gasoline? I did have that thought. I don't know if it matters, but I did have that thought.

01;19;53;04 - 01;19;55;06

Speaker 1

Well, I mean, where would they have gotten gasoline?

01;19;55;08 - 01;20;04;00

Speaker 2

Well, I mean, like if man brought a tank of gasoline up there, but are you saying that they're peanut M&Ms and booze? And that's all he brought?

01;20;04;02 - 01;20;06;07

Speaker 3

Yeah. Okay, I'm just asking.

01;20;06;14 - 01;20;10;04

Speaker 2

I'm just. I'm just curious because it never really clarified what was in the bottle.

01;20;10;05 - 01;20;14;02

Speaker 1

Are you supposed to take more things to the woods? And Eminem's and booze?

01;20;14;06 - 01;20;17;07

Speaker 2

That Eminem's and booze? Yes, Liz, I wouldn't.

01;20;17;08 - 01;20;20;08

Speaker 1

Just paint it, I would. I like Eminem's and.

01;20;20;10 - 01;20;23;12

Speaker 2

I would gross. I don't eat peanut memes. They're nasty.

01;20;23;15 - 01;20;28;21

Speaker 1

No, I would take. But you like the peanut butter ones that are like Reese's Pieces. I would take those. Yeah.

01;20;28;22 - 01;20;43;00

Speaker 2

Hell yeah. And that's I'm in there. I'm a part of that. But I mean, like, I'm just curious what they accelerant was that they had with them. But that's okay because they never really address it. That's all right. Maybe it was in the bag. Isn't the duffel bag. Roll it around. Not leaking. Anyway.

01;20;43;03 - 01;20;50;03

Speaker 1

As you'll learn with as you get further into the show. They brought this up. Okay. All right. So. Yeah. So they're talking.

01;20;50;06 - 01;20;52;09

Speaker 2

And then they find the entrance.

01;20;52;11 - 01;21;02;13

Speaker 1

Well, this is before this, like, so the kids asking you. Okay, I'm like, if it keeps its victims alive, why would it kill Roy? But I also think this is the first time that kid said anything.

01;21;02;15 - 01;21;06;22

Speaker 2

I think is pretty much the first time we talked. But Roy was a dick, remember?

01;21;06;25 - 01;21;07;29

Speaker 3

Well, yeah, even at the.

01;21;07;29 - 01;21;12;05

Speaker 1

House, like, he just like the kid never says anything. And finally, like.

01;21;12;07 - 01;21;17;00

Speaker 2

Anything, the Roy thing didn't shock me. But the kid thing, I was like, oh shit. They actually gave him a line.

01;21;17;02 - 01;21;18;03

Speaker 3

Yeah. All right. Yeah.

01;21;18;03 - 01;21;25;20

Speaker 1

And then they get to follow a trail of arms. And if you want to get me in the woods, I mean, leave me with some fucking candy. Hansel and Gretel, my ass.

01;21;25;21 - 01;21;27;24

Speaker 2

Candy will work.

01;21;27;26 - 01;21;33;20

Speaker 1

I will follow candy everywhere. Or potato chips. Potato chips. And also work. I would find go.

01;21;33;24 - 01;21;34;13

Speaker 3

Snack.

01;21;34;13 - 01;21;35;04

Speaker 2

Foods in general.

01;21;35;04 - 01;21;36;01

Speaker 1

In general. Yeah.

01;21;36;06 - 01;21;37;01

Speaker 3

I'm just I'm just.

01;21;37;01 - 01;21;40;19

Speaker 1

I'm not sure I could be bored in the world, you know, like. Oh, yeah.

01;21;40;22 - 01;21;42;26

Speaker 2

Liz, can we can we have a charcuterie board?

01;21;42;26 - 01;21;45;08

Speaker 3

Would Sam anyone? Yeah.

01;21;45;10 - 01;21;49;18

Speaker 2

Miss our sturdy. Good lord, I mean that, all right?

01;21;49;21 - 01;21;58;20

Speaker 3

That we would. I'm like this. Can we have a show report and would soon like.

01;21;58;22 - 01;21;59;18

Speaker 3

All right.

01;21;59;20 - 01;22;00;25

Speaker 2

I love you, however.

01;22;01;02 - 01;22;02;01

Speaker 3

All right, I love.

01;22;02;01 - 01;22;04;16

Speaker 1

You, but I don't love you. Psychiatry boards in the woods.

01;22;04;21 - 01;22;05;21

Speaker 3

And.

01;22;05;24 - 01;22;28;20

Speaker 2

Board in the woods way. Yeah, that's a different that's next level. But we can have we can have cheese and wine in the woods. Anything. So. Yeah. So they were, they were doing that there walking through the, the, the youngster who finally had a line Roy and and we know Roy's gone. Gone for sure. So, I my big question like I already addressed was the buzz the booze or gas.

01;22;28;20 - 01;22;32;13

Speaker 2

So then they get to is it's about the time they get to the entrance because.

01;22;32;16 - 01;22;34;05

Speaker 1

Yeah they're at the. Yeah, yeah.

01;22;34;08 - 01;22;35;11

Speaker 3

So who the fuck picked.

01;22;35;11 - 01;22;39;11

Speaker 2

The font for the sign. That was my question one.

01;22;39;13 - 01;22;42;26

Speaker 3

Because it's like it's about the sign because there's.

01;22;42;26 - 01;22;55;07

Speaker 2

Two signs I'm gonna be clear. Which one is the red and white sign, which is like a metal sign. Okay, great. But they couldn't use an actual like, metal sign font. They had to pick, like, some super stylized, like,

01;22;55;10 - 01;22;56;24

Speaker 3

Deco, like cancer.

01;22;56;25 - 01;22;58;22

Speaker 1

Metal sign font.

01;22;58;24 - 01;23;01;01

Speaker 2

I'm just like the one like a street sign. Fine.

01;23;01;07 - 01;23;02;15

Speaker 3

Okay, okay.

01;23;02;18 - 01;23;05;14

Speaker 2

They pick like some, like, super stylized shit for that.

01;23;05;16 - 01;23;08;07

Speaker 1

Okay. I just don't think that's in my font library, but go ahead.

01;23;08;09 - 01;23;08;24

Speaker 3

Well.

01;23;08;27 - 01;23;15;29

Speaker 2

But, it's it's like the it's super boring sans serif shit, I don't know. Okay. And then they moved over to.

01;23;15;29 - 01;23;21;05

Speaker 3

The, the they shoot up a little, pan up slightly and then it's also carved.

01;23;21;05 - 01;23;39;26

Speaker 2

Into the stone to not enter there. So I just think that's a really weird choice to carve into stone, to not enter there. And then also add the metal sign to not enter. There just seems like a lot of effort involved. I don't know if you're going to carve that into stone. Couldn't you just block it better?

01;23;39;29 - 01;23;41;27

Speaker 3

The same all. Yeah, there's.

01;23;42;02 - 01;24;03;01

Speaker 1

e minor and some minor in the:

01;24;03;01 - 01;24;05;15

Speaker 2

Texas we mined a lot of mercury back in the day.

01;24;05;15 - 01;24;16;17

Speaker 1

So, Okay. Yeah, so. But then Sam sees this, and then he just shrugs and walks in. So enjoy that tail. You know, everyone likes a man with a tail, Sammy. So enjoy that.

01;24;16;19 - 01;24;21;11

Speaker 2

Get that, get that toxic, get toxic. And now I want to say Britney Spears butts.

01;24;21;11 - 01;24;25;26

Speaker 1

All right. Yeah I could see that in your eyes. I could hear Britney. And, like, just my.

01;24;25;27 - 01;24;30;15

Speaker 2

Eyebrows went in and you were like, oh shit, she's going to start singing Britney.

01;24;30;18 - 01;24;31;14

Speaker 3

Oh.

01;24;31;16 - 01;24;33;08

Speaker 1

It's not Britney, bitch. All right.

01;24;33;12 - 01;24;44;09

Speaker 2

So this I was just upset by the fonts and the decision to make a cardboard sign instead of an actual blockade. Like when it carves and stone, but not put a blockade here.

01;24;44;16 - 01;24;46;09

Speaker 3

It's fine. Yeah.

01;24;46;11 - 01;25;00;06

Speaker 1

So they're walking and they're walking. They see the Windigo walking on the shaft to you and then. Oh, no, they fall through some boards and. Oh, no, there's lots of skulls. And Sam's like, it's going to be okay. Look at what's not like you just fell.

01;25;00;06 - 01;25;02;12

Speaker 2

They got a good tiny body.

01;25;02;14 - 01;25;03;15

Speaker 3

Got it. It's like you're.

01;25;03;15 - 01;25;04;11

Speaker 1

Not going to be okay.

01;25;04;12 - 01;25;07;28

Speaker 2

Pile of skulls did not does not usually equal going to be all right.

01;25;08;01 - 01;25;08;27

Speaker 1

No, no.

01;25;08;28 - 01;25;16;22

Speaker 2

Surely myself I know from my perspective I mean I'm not going to judge someone else's experience.

01;25;16;24 - 01;25;19;28

Speaker 3

Oh okay. So why not.

01;25;20;00 - 01;25;28;12

Speaker 1

You should probably lay off the white at this point. So this is a point in the podcast where Diana probably was a little shit face, so we'll just mark.

01;25;28;12 - 01;25;30;26

Speaker 3

That show based. I'm fun.

01;25;30;29 - 01;25;37;29

Speaker 1

You're fun. Diana. Okay, so, we've see we've we've we can see Dean and Haley hanging there.

01;25;38;02 - 01;25;38;10

Speaker 2

Yeah.

01;25;38;16 - 01;25;56;20

Speaker 1

And so eventually they get cut down, and then they find Tommy and Tommy's hanging there, and then Haley is real sad. And then there's a lot of crying, but then he's alive. And his puka shell necklace is also made it so. I am so glad that necklace hung out throughout this entire episode. I was amazed and.

01;25;56;23 - 01;25;58;28

Speaker 3

It made it. Yeah.

01;25;59;00 - 01;26;16;24

Speaker 1

So while they're doing that, Dean's digging through people's packs because apparently the, Wendigo also is a hoarder and stole people's packs, and he finds some flare guns, which makes him real happy. And we get some sweet flare gun twirling action, which is impressive.

01;26;16;29 - 01;26;24;28

Speaker 2

I did I was I was stoked about the flare guns. I'm not I'm not gonna lie, I was stoked about that. I'm like, they're they're twirling. They're gonna shoot. If they're on it, I like it.

01;26;25;01 - 01;26;26;28

Speaker 3

Yeah, yeah. Well, so.

01;26;27;05 - 01;26;29;00

Speaker 2

I'm a little jealous. I'm just.

01;26;29;02 - 01;26;46;19

Speaker 1

I'm a little jealous. Yeah. So then they decide, Dean is going to run off, and he's going to taunt the Wendigo with such classic lines like, bring it on, baby, I taste good. And hey, you want some white meat, bitch?

01;26;46;22 - 01;26;49;09

Speaker 3

But also, like, I mean, it wasn't it was a.

01;26;49;10 - 01;27;05;26

Speaker 2

I mean, while slightly like. It's not like it's never been done before, but it was. It's all of this game plan. They had a plan. They were executing the plan. Yes, sir. I was like, all right. So it makes sense. They have a plan that makes sense. They're executing said plan. They both knew what the plan was. They were going for it.

01;27;05;26 - 01;27;08;18

Speaker 2

On it. I mean, I'm on, but yeah, I'm on the team.

01;27;08;20 - 01;27;20;02

Speaker 1

But the Wendigo was not fooled because he's like, I could go after one man or I could go after for. Yeah, probably better odds with the four. He's he's not he's not a dumb creature.

01;27;20;04 - 01;27;21;16

Speaker 3

So.

01;27;21;18 - 01;27;23;29

Speaker 1

Then they see the Wendigo, and Sam's like.

01;27;23;29 - 01;27;24;11

Speaker 3

Go.

01;27;24;11 - 01;27;35;13

Speaker 1

Ahead, run ahead. And then he's poorly shoots at it with the flare gun. I mean, I've never shot a flare gun, so I'm not sure, like, how difficult it is.

01;27;35;13 - 01;27;36;22

Speaker 3

Aim is, I don't know.

01;27;36;23 - 01;27;45;01

Speaker 1

I don't think they're made for aiming, but I also feel like you get a pretty white target base. Let's get some flare guns and go shoot them so I can find this place.

01;27;45;04 - 01;27;49;04

Speaker 2

I just want to do that on principle. I. I don't have a real reason, but let's do it.

01;27;49;09 - 01;27;51;16

Speaker 1

I don't think you have to have a good or a good reason.

01;27;51;19 - 01;27;53;27

Speaker 3

Why don't you?

01;27;53;29 - 01;28;12;21

Speaker 1

Can you buy flare guns on Amazon? Look that up. So Sam is purely shooting at the Wendigo with the flare gun, and then they start running down the hall and, you know, they're they're cornered. And we finally get to see what the Wendigo looks like here, which basically looks like. And my first thought was, it looks like a tall Gollum.

01;28;12;23 - 01;28;36;04

Speaker 1

And and then I read up on, Supernatural The Official companion season, which was quoted on Supernatural Wiki that Eric Kripke had said he was long critical of this episode, and he thought it looked more like Gollum style gangling cousin than anything else. So we are not the only ones who thought this. Aaron thought this thing looked like column, but, you.

01;28;36;04 - 01;28;40;19

Speaker 2

Know, tall as its columns, awkwardly tall. So like cousin yeah.

01;28;40;26 - 01;28;43;05

Speaker 1

Like if you one of his precious which was.

01;28;43;08 - 01;28;44;29

Speaker 3

Humans.

01;28;45;02 - 01;28;49;27

Speaker 2

It's just human flesh. It's not something shiny which is like precious flesh.

01;28;49;29 - 01;28;50;25

Speaker 3

So.

01;28;50;27 - 01;29;11;15

Speaker 1

And he does, you know, he's got, you know, some of the matted fur. So that looks like some of the descriptions of the creature we saw. He had long claws. He was really skinny. It maybe has had a weird face. So he's there and he's corded them, and then Dean shoots it with the flare gun and doesn't miss because seems apparently a much better shot with the flare gun.

01;29;11;18 - 01;29;29;01

Speaker 1

And then it burns for a bit. You know, we we see kind of almost like a Buffy ask like burning of a vampire. Buffy doesn't really. And burning and burning. And it burns for a bit. And then they kind of flash everybody's really faces, and Sam looks really happy. Like he's just like, oh, my God, we killed the evil son of a bitch.

01;29;29;01 - 01;29;30;27

Speaker 3

I'm fulfilled.

01;29;30;29 - 01;29;51;00

Speaker 1

So Sam gets his happy, happy joy joy moment. So then they leave, and then we're back at the Ranger station. And bro, who is now apparently allowed to talk, can't stop talking. And he's telling the park rangers. It's like, maybe he's just like, oh, I like, I have a voice, but he's like, yeah, we saw these really big grizzly bears and like.

01;29;51;02 - 01;30;00;11

Speaker 2

And so for having it and being incapable of speaking to speaking intermittently, so all of a sudden being on board with telling the story they made up.

01;30;00;13 - 01;30;02;10

Speaker 3

Yeah. Weird.

01;30;02;17 - 01;30;04;26

Speaker 2

Weird. But all right. Yeah.

01;30;04;28 - 01;30;16;02

Speaker 1

So, he's doing that. Then we have a moment between Dean and Hayley when she's like, I don't know how to thank you. And Dean's like, I'm a pervert, and I'm.

01;30;16;02 - 01;30;18;17

Speaker 2

Gonna make it gross. That's what he said.

01;30;18;20 - 01;30;36;07

Speaker 1

And then she's like, don't ruin this. And then she kisses her on the cheek. So they go off and they ride off into the ambulance, presumably so Tommy can get fixed up. And now we're just having, you know, the bro moment they're sitting on, baby. And Dean says, I hate camping.

01;30;36;09 - 01;30;47;02

Speaker 2

Where Dean I laughed so hard for. He said that after our mister our. Yeah. Knowing that that would be our discourse. This on this episode, I was.

01;30;47;02 - 01;30;48;16

Speaker 3

Amused for sure.

01;30;48;16 - 01;31;04;28

Speaker 1

It was very amusing. So then they have, you know, a slight emotional moment and, you know, they talk about, you know, Dean's like, we're going to find dad and Sam's like, yeah. And then you can tell, like, now he's on board because, like, in the meantime, I'm driving then to Sam.

01;31;05;00 - 01;31;08;00

Speaker 3

So know I'm on the team now, guys.

01;31;08;03 - 01;31;15;27

Speaker 1

So Dean gives him the keys and then they ride off into the sunset. And baby, there's some really good friends room and Jesus, haul it off.

01;31;15;29 - 01;31;17;26

Speaker 2

Maybe broom rooms.

01;31;17;28 - 01;31;20;07

Speaker 3

And maybe bring brooms.

01;31;20;09 - 01;31;33;03

Speaker 1

And so they ride off into the sunset. And that brings us to the end of episode two, Wendigo. So, Diana, have you changed your mind? Are you are you are you team Dean? Team Sam.

01;31;33;05 - 01;31;34;08

Speaker 3

Now.

01;31;34;10 - 01;31;51;19

Speaker 2

Something baby wasn't in that baby in the trunk weren't an episode as much. And I was disappointed in their packing method of the trunk. I'm not either one. Neither. Neither Dean Moore. Sam has won me over yet. Okay, it doesn't mean that I'm not excited to watch the next episode. And I won't say like, I'm like.

01;31;51;19 - 01;31;53;26

Speaker 3

Fuck yeah, I need to watch for the next episode.

01;31;53;26 - 01;32;07;02

Speaker 2

But I'm like, all right, I'm ready to watch episode three. And, which I think is a positive statement overall. And but yeah, I, I there's less less car in this episode, which is sad, but,

01;32;07;04 - 01;32;09;26

Speaker 1

Well, you can't drive baby in the woods. She would not.

01;32;09;26 - 01;32;14;23

Speaker 2

She is not. It would be terrible for her pain. It would be very upsetting. And you can't do that. I understand.

01;32;15;01 - 01;32;20;23

Speaker 1

Which is why I have a Jeep. So we can have Duchess for the highway. And then we have the jeep for the woods.

01;32;20;25 - 01;32;21;25

Speaker 3

Yeah. No duh.

01;32;21;25 - 01;32;25;07

Speaker 2

I mean, that's how we do things. Yeah. So balance. It's all about to have balance.

01;32;25;10 - 01;32;27;26

Speaker 1

It is. So. Yeah.

01;32;27;28 - 01;32;47;06

Speaker 2

So now when Sam is driving, I'm just going to point out that Sam is driving now and I have no trust in his music taste because of what he called mullet rock in the previous episode. So I'm a little concerned about what that's going to mean for the music in the ongoing episodes, but we kind of address that a little bit because we know that the music for the Netflix version is very different than the television version.

01;32;47;09 - 01;32;52;28

Speaker 2

I just don't trust Sam's music taste after he called fucking Motorhead fucking mullet rock.

01;32;53;01 - 01;32;53;15

Speaker 3

Well, I.

01;32;53;15 - 01;33;05;22

Speaker 1

Mean, honestly, do you think Dean is going to give him over the stereo anyways? Because I always say that like, is my car not going to pick the music? And even if I'm on the passenger side, I'm still picking the music.

01;33;05;29 - 01;33;07;13

Speaker 3

So I'm just saying.

01;33;07;13 - 01;33;19;09

Speaker 2

That that that was a little bit I'm like, oh, if this is their rule and this is what just happened, my faith is not with Sam's music taste and Sam.

01;33;19;11 - 01;33;25;03

Speaker 1

No, no, we're you can just look at San Antonio's shitty taste in music and rewatch.

01;33;25;05 - 01;33;26;01

Speaker 3

Yeah.

01;33;26;03 - 01;33;30;21

Speaker 2

Because I can be judgy. So that's what I got, all right? Yeah, we made it.

01;33;30;26 - 01;33;33;21

Speaker 1

Yay! We made it to the next episode, too.

01;33;33;23 - 01;33;36;25

Speaker 2

Like, there was some awesome background lore about.

01;33;36;27 - 01;33;38;17

Speaker 3

Wendy Pickles.

01;33;38;19 - 01;34;08;08

Speaker 2

That we, got to discuss this evening. So I think that was, important. And I like hearing the tie in for the real lore behind the show. Lore. I think that's important for everybody to get out of this, and I'm enjoying it as well. So thank you, Liz, for doing that. And, I'm also super into seeing the actors and actresses on shows, on other shows we like, sci fi and not that, that appear here on this on supernatural so far in this in the first few episodes.

01;34;08;10 - 01;34;09;19

About the Podcast

Devil's Trap: A Supernatural Podcast
A Supernatural fan show where longtime fan Liz “trapped” Diana, into watching for the first time. Come along for a spoiler free watch with crafty urban fantasy enthusiasts.
We're going back to the beginning of the road and watching Supernatural from the beginning. For your host Liz, it's probably her fifth time through. For your other host Diana, it's her first. She claims she was scared. Naturally as a supportive friend, Liz will attempt to exploit this fear as much as possible. We also dive into the spooky spook in the show in whatever way we want - occult, folklore, true crime, shopping, GAME SHOWS?
